South Tama County Community School District
South Tama County Community School District (STC) is a rural public school district headquartered in Tama, Iowa. Service area The district has a total of of area. Almost all of the district is in Tama County while a small portion is in Poweshiek County. The district serves, in addition to Tama, Chelsea, Montour, Toledo, and Vining. It also serves the Meskwaki Settlement, a Native American settlement, and other areas. Typically, Meskwaki Nation students attend the Meskwaki Settlement School and move on to South Tama County High School. History In July 2018, Jared Smith became the superintendent. He previously was the principal of Muscatine High School. He received a two-year contract renewal in February 2020. In 2020, there was a vote to pass a school bond that would rebuild the middle school as an attachment to the high school building in Tama, which would mean the end of use of the Toledo building. Tama is a city in Tama County, Iowa, United States. The population was 3,130 at the time of the 2020 census. Tama is situated two miles south of Toledo, the county seat. The two towns are close enough to have nearly grown together over the years. History Tama got its start in the year 1862, following construction of the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad through the territory. Tama is located a few miles from the Meskwaki Settlement, Iowa's only significant Native American community. Tama was located on the historic Lincoln Highway and is home to an original Lincoln Highway bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Meskwaki Settlement School (MSS) is a tribally controlled school with oversight by the Bureau of Indian Education, is located in the Meskwaki Nation, also known as the Meskwaki Settlement. It is in unincorporated Tama County, Iowa, about west of Tama, and is a property of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa. History The Sac and Fox Settlement School was originally established as a Day School by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The school then became part of the South Tama County Community School District, and then closed in 1972. After application by the tribal members to the Bureau of Indian Education, the school re-opened in 1980 as a tribally operated school. Meskwaki Settlement
The Meskwaki Settlement is an unincorporated community in Tama County, Iowa, United States, west of Tama. It encompasses the reservation lands of the Meskwaki Nation (federally recognized as the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa), one of three Sac and Fox tribes in the United States. The others are located in Oklahoma and Kansas. The settlement is located in the historic territory of the Meskwaki (Fox), an Algonquian people. Meskwaki people established the settlement in 1857 by privately repurchasing a small part of the land they had lost in the Sac and Fox treaty of 1842. Government The Nation operates a tribal school, tribal courts, public works department, and police force. As of 2009, there were about 1,300 members of this Meskwaki Tribe, of whom about 800 live on the settlement; non-tribal members, including spouses, also live on the settlement.
