South Portsmouth–South Shore Station
South Portsmouth–South Shore station is an Amtrak intercity rail station in South Shore, Kentucky. It primarily serves the city of Portsmouth, Ohio, located across the Ohio River. History In pre-Amtrak years several C&O trains served a different station in Portsmouth: ''Fast Flying Virginian'' (west to Cincinnati, and sections east to Washington, D.C., and Newport News), ''George Washington'' (sections west to Cincinnati and Louisville, and sections east to Washington, D.C. and Newport News) and the '' Sportsman'' (northwest to Detroit, and sections east to Washington, D.C., and Newport News). Norfolk & Western trains called at another station in Portsmouth: '' Pocahantas'' (Cincinnati and Columbus – Norfolk) and ''Powhatan Arrow'' (Cincinnati – Norfolk). South Shore, Kentucky
South Shore is a home rule-class city in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,122 at the 2010 census, down from 1,226 in 2000. It is located along the Ohio River across from Portsmouth, Ohio, at the mouth of Tygarts Creek. South Shore is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The South Portsmouth–South Shore station serves Amtrak's ''Cardinal'' Trains 50 & 51. History South Shore was first settled in 1890 by the Fullerton, Warnock, and the Morton families from the nearby Tygarts Valley. The Sportsman was a named passenger night train of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. It was the Chesapeake & Ohio's long-standing train bound for Detroit from Washington, D.C. and Phoebus, Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay, opposite Norfolk, Virginia. It was unique among C&O trains for its route north from the C&O mainline in southern Ohio. For most of its years it had a secondary western terminus in Louisville at its Central Station. Mountaineer (train)
The ''Mountaineer'' was a passenger train operated by Amtrak between Norfolk, Virginia, and Chicago, Illinois, via Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the first train to use the Norfolk and Western Railway's tracks since the creation of Amtrak in 1971 and followed the route of the ''Pocahontas'', the N&W's last passenger train. The ''James Whitcomb Riley'' was a passenger train that operated between Chicago, Illinois, and Cincinnati, Ohio, via Indianapolis, Indiana. Originally operated by the New York Central Railroad, it was taken over by Amtrak in 1971. In public transport, a request stop, flag stop, or whistle stop is a stop or station at which buses or trains, respectively, stop only on request; that is, only if there are passengers or freight to be picked up or dropped off. The ''Powhatan Arrow'' was one of the named passenger trains of the Norfolk and Western. Its route ran from Norfolk, Virginia, to Cincinnati, Ohio.
