South Funen Archipelago
The South Funen Archipelago ( da, Det Sydfynske Øhav) is the popular name for the part of the Baltic Sea south of the ports of Faaborg and Svendborg on the Danish island of Funen. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar sites (wetlands). It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed in 1971. Every three years, representatives of the contracting parties meet as the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP), the policy-making organ of the convention which adopts decisions (resolutions and recommendations) to administer the work of the convention and improve the way in which the parties are able to implement its objectives. Thurø
Thurø is a small Danish island in the south-east of Funen and belongs to the Svendborg municipality. Thurø is part of the South Funen Archipelago, comprising c. 55 islands altogether. The island had 3,555 inhabitants . Connected to Svendborg proper by a small bridge, Thurø has become a popular place to live due to its quiet streets and proximity to both Svendborg and the new motorway to Odense. Thurø is also a holiday destination, with two popular sandy beaches, three campsites and a number of houses for rent. The sea around horseshoe-shaped Thurø is considered fine fishing-water, particularly for trout. The Danish Wadden Sea Islands ( da, Danske Vadehavsøer) are a group of islands on the western coast of Jutland, Denmark. They have belonged to the region of ''Southern Denmark'' since January 1, 2007. Previously they belonged to the counties of '' South Jutland'' and ''Ribe''. Sydhavsøerne ( lit. "The South Sea Islands"), sometimes also referred to simply as Lolland-Falster from the two largest islands, is an informal but common term used in Danish to refer to the archipelago just south of Zealand, Denmark's largest island where its capital Copenhagen is located. Part of the Baltic Sea, the term covers Lolland, Falster and Møn as well as the numerous smaller islands of the surrounding straits, fjords and waters. The name is a parody on the similar Danish name for the South Pacific Islands of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia. Avernakø
Avernakø is a Danish island south of Funen. The island covers an area of 6 km2 and has about 100 inhabitants. Originally, Avernakø was two separate islands, "Korshavn" and "Avernak". In 1937 the two islands were connected by a dam named "Drejet" ("The Turn"), due to its peculiar shape. Main occupations are agriculture and tourism. Children attend the school at the nearby island Lyø. Strynø
Strynø is a small Danish island lying west of Langeland, north-east of Ærø, and south of Tåsinge in the South Funen Archipelago. A constituent part of Langeland municipality, Strynø covers an area of 4.88 km2. The population of the island on 1 January 2019 was 188. Strynø hosts one shop, an inn, a kindergarten, a school (ages 5–10), and ''Øhavets Smakkecenter'': a small maritime museum and activities centre. A ferry service of around eight 30-minute crossings per day connects Strynø with Rudkøbing on Langeland. Lyø is one of the islands of the South Funen Archipelago, located south of the larger island of Funen, in southern Denmark. It covers an area of and has 81 inhabitants. The island can be reached by ferry from Faaborg and Avernakø. Administratively, the island belongs to Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality . Lyø Village Lyø Village is located in the centre of the island. The setting is dominated by old farmhouses, large trees and low stone walls, surrounding five ponds (originally 12). Tåsinge () is a Danish island immediately south of Funen, opposite and facing Svendborg, divided from Funen by Svendborgsund.See detailed Denmark roadmap in References section. The island covers an area of circa . It is part of the South Funen Archipelago and has 6,111 inhabitants. The Danish national road 9 crosses the island. Until the municipality reform of 1970, the island retained its own municipality (sognekommune). Since 1970, it has been part of Svendborg Municipality. Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that is enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the North and Central European Plain. Ærø
Ærø () is one of the Danish Baltic Sea islands, and part of the Southern Denmark Region. Since 1 January 2006 the whole of Ærø has constituted a single municipality, known as Ærø Kommune. Before that date, there were two municipalities on the island: Ærøskøbing Kommune in the west and Marstal Kommune in the east. This merger was part of a reform of the public sector with the laws being effective as of 26 June 2005. This merger was allowed to happen one year before the other municipalities merged as there had already been an island-wide referendum with a majority of voters for the merger.
