Benton, Illinois
Benton is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Illinois. The population was 6,709 at the 2020 census. History Founding Benton, the county seat of Franklin County, took its name from the prominent senator from Missouri, Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858). The village of Benton was organized in 1841 on of property donated by John Ewing and Walter S. Akin. In 1902 the village became a city, and incorporated under the mayor/commissioner form of government. Franklin County was platted in 1818, the year Illinois became a state, at twice its current size. It included the territory that is now Williamson County. Carbondale is a city in Jackson and Williamson Counties, Illinois, United States, within the Southern Illinois region informally known as "Little Egypt". Carlyle is a city in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,253 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County. Beckemeyer, Illinois
Beckemeyer is a village in Wade Township, Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 923 as of the 2020 census. History Samuel B. Watkins was reported to be the first settler in the area, ''circa'' 1817. Beckemeyer began as a way station on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. It was organized and laid out in 1866 and originally named "Buxton" in honor of a railroad attorney. A large coal seam underlying the village and surrounding area was mined starting in 1894, resulting in growth of Buxton. It was renamed "Beckemeyer" after an election held in 1905. The first school and bank were opened in 1906. On 25 March 1947, the Centralia Coal mine exploded killing 111 people. Nine of the people killed were citizens of Beckemeyer. Geography According to the 2010 census, Steeleville has a total area of , of which (or 99.48%) is land and (or 0.52%) is water. Steeleville is located adjacent to Mary's River, a direct tributary of the Mississippi River. History Steeleville had the names Alma, Georgetown and Steele's Mill before obtaining its present name.
