South African Class A 4-8-2T
The South African Railways Class A 4-8-2T of 1888 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Colony of Natal. In 1888, the Natal Government Railways placed the first five of its eventual one hundred Class D steam locomotives in service. The last was delivered in 1899. They were the first locomotives in the world to be built with a wheel arrangement, later to become known as the Mountain type. In 1912, when these locomotives were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered and designated Class A. Natal Government Railways
The Natal Government Railways (NGR) was formed in January 1877 in the Colony of Natal. In 1877, the Natal Government Railways acquired the Natal Railway Company for the sum of £40,000, gaining the line from the Point to Durban and from Durban to Umgeni. This move, inspired in part by the neighbouring Cape Prime Minister John Molteno's 1873 establishment of the Cape Government Railways, was intended to drive the extension of Natal's railways inland, towards the Drakensberg and eventually the Orange Free State. The Natal Government Railways also adopted the Cape gauge. The core line went from Durban to Volksrust, but reached Charlestown ( from the border of the South African Republic) in 1891 and was linked to the Witwatersrand in 1895. Mizens Railway
Mizens Railway is a 7¼ inch gauge miniature railway located in a 10-acre site near Woking in Surrey, England. The railway comprises three routes, the longest being nearly 1 mile long. A variety of locomotives are in use, including several steam engines. The railway was named after its original location at Mizens Farm, now the headquarters of McLaren until moving to the present site in 2000. Routes Three routes are operated by the railway on public running days, The Suburban, the Miler and the Highlander. A maximum of two of these routes can be operated at one time for the public. The Highlander saw its testing in mid-2014 with limited passenger runs. The Outeniqua Transport Museum is a railway museum located in George, South Africa. The Outeniqua Railway Museum is one of Transnet Heritage Foundation museums. Situated in the former PX-goods shed in George, the museum opened on 24 September 1998. The museum collection consists of a total of 21 steam locomotives and a total of 22 coaches among other vehicles. Germiston, also known as kwaDukathole, is a small city in the East Rand region of Gauteng, South Africa, administratively forming part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since the latter's establishment in 2000. Empangeni is a city in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is approximately 157 kilometres north of Durban, in hilly countryside, overlooking a flat coastal plain and the major harbour town of Richards Bay 16 kilometres away.
