South African Class 16C 4-6-2
The South African Railways Class 16C 4-6-2 of 1919 was a steam locomotive. During 1919, the South African Railways placed ten Class 16C steam locomotives with a 4-6-2 Pacific type wheel arrangement in mainline passenger service. Another twenty entered service in 1922. Transnet Freight Rail is a South African rail transport company, formerly known as Spoornet. The Walschaerts valve gear is a type of valve gear used to regulate the flow of steam to the pistons in steam locomotives, invented by Belgium, Belgian railway mechanical engineering, engineer Egide Walschaerts in 1844. The gear is sometimes named without the final "s", since it was incorrectly patented under that name. Trofimoff Valve
The Trofimoff valve (german: Trofimoff-Schieber) (also ''Trofimov'', ''Troffimoff'' or ''Trofimof'') is a springless pressure-compensation piston valve for steam locomotives. Overview The function of the valve is to improve efficiency when running light, with the regulator closed, such as when descending hills. The valve consists of the usual parts of a piston valve: two valve pistons with sealing rings, carried on a valve spindle driven by the valve gear. The difference with a Trofimoff valve is that the piston heads are free to slide on the spindle. When steam pressure is applied, under normal operating conditions, steam is admitted to the centre of the valve chest. This forces the valve heads apart against end stops on the spindle and into their normal working position. The valvegear works as usual. South African Class 16DA 4-6-2
The South African Class 16DA 4-6-2 include two locomotive types, both designated Class 16DA in spite of their difference in respect of firebox size and performance. The first type was built by Hohenzollern Locomotive Works and Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1928 and 1929 respectively. The Henschel-built Class 16DA locomotives of 1930, with their much wider fireboxes, their correspondingly larger grate areas and slightly larger diameter trailing wheels were sufficiently different from the Baldwin and Hohenzollern-builts to justify a separate classification, such as Class 16DB, but this did not happen and the locomotives ended up being known as the Wide Firebox Class 16DA.Espitalier, T.J.; Day, W.A.J. The South African Railways Class 16D 4-6-2 of 1925 was a steam locomotive. In 1925, the South African Railways placed two American-built Class 16D locomotives with a Pacific type wheel arrangement in passenger train service.
