Sour Cream was a Dutch recorder trio. They were involved in the Dutch counterculture movement, which resulted in some unusual performances: The concluding piece of one of their Boston concerts featured a Keystone Kops-style chase around the stage. A year or two later, with the ensemble playing Telemann trios again in Boston, Brüggen wandered on to the stage, donned a pair of dark sunglasses, stretched himself out on a chaise longue and proceeded to read the newspaper. Recorder (musical Instrument)
The recorder is a family of woodwind musical instruments in the group known as ''internal duct flutes'': flutes with a whistle mouthpiece, also known as fipple flutes. A recorder can be distinguished from other duct flutes by the presence of a thumb-hole for the upper hand and seven finger-holes: three for the upper hand and four for the lower. It is the most prominent duct flute in the western classical tradition. Recorders are made in various sizes with names and compasses roughly corresponding to various vocal ranges. The sizes most commonly in use today are the soprano (also known as descant, lowest note C5), alto (also known as treble, lowest note F4), tenor (lowest note C4), and bass (lowest note F3). Franciscus ("Frans") Jozef Brüggen (30 October 1934 – 13 August 2014) was a Dutch Conducting, conductor, recorder player and baroque flautist. Biography Born in Amsterdam, Brüggen was the last of the nine children of August Brüggen, a textile factory owner, and his wife Johanna (née Verkley), an amateur singer. He studied recorder (musical instrument), recorder and flute at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum. He also studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam. In 1955, at the age of 21, he was appointed professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. His reputation was initially as a recorder and Baroque flute virtuoso, and he commissioned several works for recorder including Luciano Berio's ''Gesti'' (1965).J.M. Kees Boeke (musician)
Kees Boeke (born January 1950) is a Dutch recorder player and composer. Biography and career Kees Boeke was born in Amsterdam. After studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (recorder with Frans Brüggen and cello with Anner Bijlsma), from which he graduated with honors, he founded the ensemble Quadro Hotteterre. He was for many years a member of the medieval and Renaissance Ensemble Syntagma Musicum (Kees Otten) and co-founder of Sour Cream (1972), Little Consort Amsterdam (1978) and the Ensemble Mala Punica (1989). In 2001 he formed the medieval ensemble Tetraktys. In 1970 Kees Boeke began teaching at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and in 1975 at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. Since 1990 he has taught recorder and Early Music at the University of Music and Theatre in Zurich. Walter Van Hauwe
Walter van Hauwe (born 16 November 1948) is a Dutch recorder player. Biography and career After lessons at the music school of Delft, where his father was director Pierre van Hauwe, Hauwe studied recorder with Frans Brüggen at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Working with Kees Boeke he developed a controversial education system called the BLOK (block) system. He has been a professor of recorder at the Sweelinck Conservatory since 1971, and also teaches historical performance at the Royal College of Music in London. In 2002 he received the Dutch Prins Bernard Music Award. Hauwe has performed or worked with Quadro Hotteterre, Little Consort, Sour Cream, Maarten Altena Ensemble and marimba player Keiko Abe.
