Sound Unlimited (TV Show)
''Sounds'', originally broadcast as ''Sound Unlimited'', was a popular Australian television series featuring pop and rock music, live performances, music videos and interviews. It was broadcast on Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m. for three hours, on the Seven Network beginning in late 1974 to end in December 1987. For most of its run it was hosted by former disc jockey, Donnie Sutherland. It is often credited as the first of its kind in the world, created because Australia was too far away for artists to travel to for live performances. History ''Sounds'' began as ''Sounds Unlimited'' in late 1974, just before its long-time rival, the ABC's ''Countdown''. Donnie Sutherland
Donald Sutherland OAM (born 22 December 1946) is an Australian radio and television presenter. He was the host of TV pop music show ''Sounds'' between 1975 and 1987. Sutherland has also worked as a TV producer and music journalist, and is associated with the local greyhound racing industry. Biography Sutherland was born on 22 December 1946 in Fairfield, New South Wales. His father, Andrew Ross Sutherland, was a bus driver. His older brother, Ross Sutherland, was an apprentice jockey who died in February 1958, aged 18, after a four-horse collision at Gosford race-track. His younger brothers are Ken and Ted; the family lived at Bossley Park. At 14 years old Sutherland also became an apprentice jockey, but increasing weight ended this career after four years. From mid-1965 Sutherland recorded voice demos for job applications as a radio presenter. He fronted the Titans, who released a single, " Mocking Bird Hill", in March 1966. Graham Webb (broadcaster)
Graham "Spider" Webb (born 19 April 1936) is a prominent Australian radio and TV broadcaster and producer. Biography Graham Webb began his radio career a2TM Tamworthin 1954. In 1955, he moved to Brisbane, to become the "junior" announcer for 4BH, before moving on to 4GY Gympie, to gain more experience. After a stint in National Service, Graham returned to Sydney in 1957, where he became the announcer for the Sunday religious programs on 2CH. Subsequently, Graham became Reg Grundy's offsider on the radio version of " Wheel Of Fortune". In late 1957, Graham joined radio 2UE, where he hosted the first Top 40 radio show on Sydney radio in the late 1950s, working with Gary O'Callaghan, John Laws, Tony Withers and Bob Rogers. This was followed by a brief move to 4KQ in Brisbane in 1960, then back to Sydney to host 2GB breakfast in 1961. The Seven Network (commonly known as Channel Seven or simply Seven) is a major Australian commercial free-to-air Television broadcasting in Australia, television network. It is owned by Seven West Media, Seven West Media Limited, and is one of five main free-to-air television networks in Australia. The network's headquarters are located in Sydney. As of 2014, it is the second-largest network in the country in terms of population reach. ''Countdown'' was a weekly Australian music television program that was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 8 November 1974 until 19 July 1987. It was created by Executive Producer Michael Shrimpton, producer/director Robbie Weekes and record producer and music journalist Ian "Molly" Meldrum. Countdown was produced at the studios of the ABC in the Melbourne suburb of Ripponlea. It was screened Sunday night from 6:00pm to 7:00. Johnny O'Keefe
John Michael O'Keefe (19 January 1935 – 6 October 1978) was an Australian rock and roll singer whose career began in the 1950s. Some of his hits include " Wild One" (1958), " Shout!" and "She's My Baby". In his twenty-year career, O'Keefe released over fifty singles, 50 EPs and 100 albums. Love's Theme
"Love's Theme" is an instrumental piece written by Barry White in around 1965, and recorded and released as a single by White's The Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1973. It is one of the few instrumental and purely orchestral singles to reach No. 1 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in the United States, which it did in early 1974. ''Billboard'' ranked it as the No. 3 song for 1974. The piece was included on two albums: 1973's '' Under the Influence of... Love Unlimited'' (by the vocal group ''Love Unlimited'') and 1974's ''Rhapsody in White'' by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The recording, with a large string orchestra, wah-wah guitar, and big rhythm, is considered to be an influence on the disco sound, which would explode in popularity the following year. The Love Unlimited Orchestra was a 40-piece string-laden orchestra formed by American singer Barry White, and serving as a backing unit for White and for female vocal trio Love Unlimited. From the early 1970s on, they also recorded several singles and albums under their own name. Career The orchestra was originally formed in 1972 to back White's female vocal group Love Unlimited for their debut album. The following year they began supporting White for his solo debut ''I've Got So Much to Give''. Their biggest hit was 1973's instrumental single "Love's Theme".
