Soulside
Soulside, also spelled Soul Side, was an American post-hardcore band from the greater Washington, D.C. area. The original name of the band was Lunchmeat which was formed by high school students Bobby Sullivan, Chris Thomson, Scott McCloud and Alexis Fleisig in 1985. Lunchmeat played their last show under that name on August 29 of the same year as the group went on hiatus while the members went to college. The next summer the band reunited under the name Soulside recording an album at Inner Ear with Ian MacKaye, Don Zientara, and Eli Janney. The album was the second release on Sammich Records. At the end of the summer, the band again went on hiatus as the members returned to college except for Thomson who had decided not return to college and formed Ignition with Chris Bald. When the other three band members returned from college in 1987, they had all agreed to quit college and dedicate themselves to the band. Bobby Sullivan
Bobby Sullivan is a musician and activist. He grew up in the Washington, DC punk music, punk scene. Forming Soulside in 1983, their first release under the name Lunch Meat was a split 7" with Dave Grohl's first band, Mission Impossible. After the first 7", all their work (three albums and another 7") was produced by Ian MacKaye and released on Dischord Records. Soulside toured extensively in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and toured Europe in 1989, including Eastern Europe. Soulside were the only American band to play at one of the illegal punk shows held in East Berlin in the 1980s, shows put on in tolerant Lutheran churches against the wishes of the dictatorship and its security organs such as the Stasi. The shows normally featured banned East German groups, and only rarely did international bands appear, traveling into East Berlin on tourist visas and playing in borrowed gear. Less Deep Inside Keeps (Soulside Album)
''Less Deep Inside Keeps'' is the first full-length studio album recorded by Soulside as a Sammich/Dischord (sr02/DIS22½) joint release. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Va. by Don Zientara and produced by Ian MacKaye in 1986. Originally released on vinyl, it was rereleased by Dischord Records (sr02CD) in 2003 on cd. Actually untitled, the artwork on either side of the spine is often used to identify it. Full spine title "Becoming Less Less Deep To Be Inside Nothing Keeps." The original release featured a grey cover. Repressings included green, blue and yellow. The artwork was created by Cynthia Connolly, illustrations by Chris Thomson and cover photo by Scott McCloud. Girls Against Boys
Girls Against Boys is a post-hardcore band which formed in Washington, D.C. and subsequently relocated to New York City shortly after their formation in 1989. The band released albums on the labels Adult Swim, Touch and Go Records, Geffen Records, and Jade Tree from 1990 to 2002. The band then sporadically played shows from 2003 until 2009 when they became inactive as a whole. In 2013, Girls Against Boys briefly toured and self-released their first new material in 11 years. After another hiatus in 2017, they reunited for a longer term in 2021. Alexis Fleisig
Alexis Fleisig is an American drummer and photographer, best recognized for his involvement with several Washington, D.C., D.C.-based bands. Known primarily for his involvement in the post-hardcore group Girls Against Boys, Fleisig was also a founding member of the Soulside and currently performs in Paramount Styles and Bellini (Italian band), Bellini. Biography Alexis Fleisig gained an appreciation for the drums by listening to classic rock musicians such as Keith Moon, Ringo Starr and John Bonham. Despite reservations, Flesig's father eventually decided to let him buy a drum kit. In 1986 Fleisig joined his first band, a hardcore punk outfit called Lünchmeat. Johnny Temple (bassist)
Johnny Temple is an American bassist, known best for his work in the post-hardcore bands Soulside and Girls Against Boys. Temple also formed a side project with fellow Girls Against Boys member Scott McCloud called New Wet Kojak. In 1996 he founded Akashic Books out of Brooklyn with the intent of publishing works by independent artists. Biography Johnny Temple grew up on 16th Street Northwest in Washington D.C. In high school, he worked at a reggae record store where his interest in music peaked. In college he studied the history, culture, and politics of Black Americans at Wesleyan University, eventually earning a master's degree in social work at Columbia University in New York City. Post-hardcore
Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. It was initially inspired by post-punk and noise rock. Like post-punk, the term has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen (band), Minutemen. Don Zientara
Don Zientara ( ) is an American record producer and musician. He owns and runs Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, located just outside Washington D.C., and is most widely known for his production work with Fugazi, Minor Threat and various other Dischord Records artists. Zientara released four albums of music on the Northern Liberties label. Music by Zientara has also been released by Crooked Beat Records in Alexandria, Virginia. He contributed four songs to ''A Bang On The Ear'', released in 2016 for Record Store Day. He also contributed to ''Recutting The Crap, Volume One'', a tribute to the Clash released by Crooked Beat Records. Circus Lupus
Circus Lupus was a post-hardcore band based in the area of Washington, D.C. The band originally formed in Madison, Wisconsin, where one-time Ignition and Soul Side bassist Chris Thomson met guitarist Chris Hamley and drummer Arika Casebolt while attending school. The name "Circus Lupus" comes from an SCTV sketch about "Circus Lupus, the Circus of Wolves", a mock TV commercial for an entirely wolf-filled traveling circus, with graphics of wolves on trapeze swings and other circus apparatus. Reg Shrader initially played bass with the band. He was replaced by Seth Lorinczi, as the band was making its transition from Madison to Washington. Rain (American Band)
Rain was a short-lived American band, considered a key part of the second wave of Washington, D.C.'s Revolution Summer movement, which is regarded as the original wave of emotional hardcore punk. They followed acts like Embrace and Rites of Spring. The band was notable for comprising members of other influential hardcore/punk acts; Bert Queiroz spent time in Youth Brigade and Jon Kirschten had a stint with Gray Matter prior to forming Rain, while Eli Janney later formed noted post-hardcore act Girls Against Boys with Scott McCloud after Rain's dissolution.
