In music, sotto voce (, ; ) is a dramatic lowering of the vocal or instrumental volume—not necessarily ''pianissimo'', but a definitely hushed tonal quality. Examples of sotto voce include: * In Mozart's Ave verum corpus, K. 618, where it is the only dynamic marked, at the beginning of all choral and instrumental parts. * In the sung parts in Mozart's Requiem, K. 626, particularly the Dies irae sequence: ** In the ''Tuba mirum'' movement, during the 'sighing' line 'Cum vix justus' ('When the just may hardly (be sure)'), when the four soloists sing together for the first time. In music, the dynamics of a piece is the variation in loudness between notes or phrases. Dynamics are indicated by specific musical notation, often in some detail. However, dynamics markings still require interpretation by the performer depending on the musical context: for instance, the ''forte'' marking (meaning loud) in one part of a piece might have quite different objective loudness in another piece or even a different section of the same piece. Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart)
''Ave verum corpus'' (Hail, true body), ( K. 618), is a motet in D major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791. It is a setting of the Latin hymn Ave verum corpus. Mozart wrote it for Anton Stoll, a friend who was the church musician of St. Stephan in Baden bei Wien. The motet was composed for the feast of Corpus Christi; the autograph is dated 17 June 1791. It is scored for SATB choir, string instruments and organ. History Mozart composed the motet in 1791 in the middle of writing his opera ''Die Zauberflöte''. He wrote it while visiting his wife Constanze, who was pregnant with their sixth child and staying in the spa Baden bei Wien. Mozart set the 14th century Eucharistic hymn in Latin "Ave verum corpus". Requiem (Mozart)
The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. The autograph manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated Introit in Mozart's hand, and detailed drafts of the Kyrie and the sequence Dies irae as far as the first eight bars of the Lacrymosa movement, and the Offertory. It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost "scraps of paper" for the remainder; he later claimed the Sanctus and Benedictus and the Agnus Dei as his own. Franz Xaver Süssmayr
Franz Xaver Süssmayr (German: ''Franz Xaver Süßmayr'', or ''Suessmayr'' in English; 1766 – September 17, 1803) was an Austrian composer and conductor. Popular in his day, he is now known primarily as the composer who completed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's unfinished Requiem. The ''Lacrimosa'' (Latin for " weeping/tearful"), also a name that derives from ''Our Lady of Sorrows'', a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. The Nocturnes, Op. 48 are a set of two nocturnes for solo piano written by Frédéric Chopin in 1841 and published the following year in 1842. They are dedicated to Mlle. Laure Duperré. Chopin later sold the copyright for the nocturnes for 2,000 francs along with several other pieces. Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48, No. 1 The Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48, No. 1 is initially marked '' lento'' and is in meter. In general, the scheme of the music is ternary form and follows A–B–A′. The piece becomes ''poco più lento'' at measure 25 and enters its middle section, which is a chorale in C major. Later, it moves to a technically demanding ''doppio movimento agitato'' at measure 49 which features fortissimo octave passages and double octave arpeggios.
