Sortland Naval Base
or is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Vesterålen. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Sortland. Other population centres in Sortland include Bø, Holand, Holmstad, Liland, Sigerfjord, Strand, and Vik. The Norwegian Coast Guard has its northern base in Sortland, called ''Kystvaktskvadron Nord''. In 1997, the municipal council declared "town status" for the urban area of Sortland. Sortland is the largest town and commercial centre in Vesterålen. The town of Sortland is located close to the Sortland Bridge which crosses the Sortlandsundet strait and connects the two large islands of Langøya and Hinnøya by road. Sortland (town)
is a town and the administrative centre of Sortland Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The town is located on the east coast of the island of Langøya, along the Sortlandsundet strait. In 1997, the municipality decided to declare " town status" for the urban area of Sortland. Sortland is the largest town and commercial centre in the whole Vesterålen region and is often referred to as "the blue town by the strait" () since many of the buildings are painted blue. The Norwegian National Road 85 highway begins at Sortland and crosses the Sortland Bridge to connect the town to the nearby European route E10 highway on the neighboring island of Hinnøya. Vik, Sortland
Vik is a village in Sortland Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located on the island of Langøya, about north of the town of Sortland. The Vik farm previously comprised an area completely from the isthmus Vikeid in the west to Gåsfjord in the northeast, spanning between its furthers points. Today, however, Vik is considered limited to the middle of this larger area. Vik lies on the north side of the inlet Vikosen, the outlet of the river Vikelva. The valley Vikdalen and the lake Vikvatnet lie north of Vik. The island Vikøya lies in the Sortlandsundet strait east of Vik and across the bay entrance Vikbotn. Vik is connected to the town of Sortland by County Road 956, which branches off of County Road 820 at the Vik Bridge where the river Vikelva empties into the inlet Vikosen. Eidsfjorden (Nordland)
Eidsfjorden is a fjord in Nordland county, Norway. The long fjord cuts into the island of Langøya in the Vesterålen archipelago and it is located in the municipalities of Bø, Hadsel, and Sortland. It branches off of the main Vesterålsfjorden which is part of Norwegian Sea. The innermost part of the fjord is part of Sortland Municipality. The outer part of the fjord is split with the western coast belonging to Bø Municipality and the eastern coast belonging to Hadsel Municipality. Several small fjords branch north from the fjord: Jørnfjord, Hellfjord, Melfjord, Olderfjord, and Bjørndalsfjord. Langenes, Nordland
Langenes is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality, which existed from 1919 until 1964, encompassed the western shore of the Gavlfjorden in what is now Øksnes Municipality. It is located on the northern end of the large island of Langøya in the Vesterålen archipelago. The administrative centre was in the village of Stø, just east of the Langenes Church in the northern part of the municipality. History The municipality of Langenes was established on 1 July 1919 when the northeastern part of Øksnes Municipality was split off from Øksnes to form the new municipality. Initially, Langenes had a population of 1,085. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. Gavlfjorden
Gavlfjorden is a fjord (more accurately, a sound) in Nordland county, Norway. The long fjord separates the large islands of Langøya and Andøya in the Vesterålen archipelago and it runs along the border of three municipalities: Øksnes, Andøy, and Sortland. The Schei Committee ( no, Schei-komitéen) was a committee named by the Government of Norway to look into the organization of municipalities in Norway post-World War II. It convened in 1946, and its formal name was (The 1946 Committee on Municipal Division). Hinnøya
Hinnøya is the fourth-largest island in Norway, and the largest outside the Svalbard archipelago. The lies just off the western coast of Northern Norway. The island sits on the border of Nordland and Troms og Finnmark counties. Langøya is the third largest island of Norway (outside of Svalbard), with an area of . The island is a part of the Vesterålen archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. The island includes the municipalities of Bø and Øksnes as well as parts of the municipalities of Sortland and Hadsel.
