Sonya Jaquez Lewis is an American politician serving as a member of the Colorado Senate from the 17th district. She is a member of the Democratic Party and resides in Lafayette, Colorado. Previously, she served in the Colorado House of Representatives, representing the 12th district in Boulder County. Early life and education Sonya Jaquez Lewis was born to Georgia and Robert Lewis in Charlotte, North Carolina, in . Lewis graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1981. She was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma and on the board of directors of WXYC. Colorado's 17th Senate district is one of 35 districts in the Colorado Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Sonya Jaquez Lewis since 2021, succeeding appointed Democrat Mike Foote, who chose not to seek re-election. Geography District 17 is based in eastern Boulder County, covering Lafayette, Louisville, most of Longmont, and parts of Erie. The North Carolina United States Senate election of 1990 was held on November 6, 1990, as part of the nationwide elections to the Senate. The general election was fought between the Republican incumbent Jesse Helms and the Democratic nominee former Mayor of Charlotte Harvey Gantt. Helms won re-election to a fourth term by a slightly wider margin than the close election in 1984. Helms drew controversy for airing what became known as the " Hands" ad produced by Alex Castellanos.
