Sono Art-World Wide Pictures was an American film distribution and production company in operation from 1927 to 1933. Their first feature film was ''The Rainbow Man'' (1929), while one of their most prominent was ''The Great Gabbo'' (1929) starring Erich von Stroheim and directed by James Cruze for James Cruze Productions, Inc. One of the last films distributed by the company was ''A Study in Scarlet'' (1933) starring Reginald Owen as Sherlock Holmes. Sono Art was the original U.S. distributor for four Alfred Hitchcock-directed films, ''Downhill'' (1927), '' Easy Virtue'' (1928), '' The Manxman'' (1929), and ''Blackmail'' (1929), as well as the British Anna May Wong vehicle ''Piccadilly'' (1929). Merger In 1933, Sono-Art merged with Rayart Pictures to form Monogram Pictures. Allied Pictures
Allied Pictures was an American film production company that operated between 1931 and 1934. Controlled by the producer M.H. Hoffman, it was one of the Poverty Row companies of the era turning out low-budget B pictures. The company's best known film is ''A Shriek in the Night'', a thriller from 1933 starring Ginger Rogers. History Hoffman established the company in 1931, a year after he had set up another outfit Liberty Pictures. For Allied, Hoffmann signed up Hoot Gibson, a Western star who had recently been released from his contract at Universal Pictures. Gibson still had a popular following, and the company used the profits from his films to back more ambitious literary adaptations that Hoffmann wanted to make such as '' Vanity Fair'' and ''Unholy Love''. ''Blaze o' Glory'' is a 1929 American musical war film directed by George Crone and Renaud Hoffman. It stars Eddie Dowling and Betty Compson. The soundtrack survives. Plot At the stand of his murder trial, defendant Eddie Williams recounts his experiences. In 1917, he had a successful Broadway stage career and marriage to Helen Williams. However, with the American entry into World War I he was sent to the Western Front and debilitated by poison gas when saving an Imperial German Army soldier. After returning home Eddie becomes unemployed, while to his chagrin Helen is able to hold a job. After finding Helen in an affair with her employer Carl Hummel, he shoots Hummel in a fit of rage.
