''Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form'' is the seventh studio album by American sludge metal band Crowbar. It was released on August 21, 2001. It is the last album to feature guitarist Sammy Duet, and the first and only album to feature bassist Jeff Okoneski and ex-Machine Head drummer Tony Costanza. Songs such as "The Lasting Dose" and "To Build a Mountain" have become mandatory staples on Crowbar's live setlists. The front cover is of St. Anthony's Garden behind St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Louisiana. Reception ''Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form'' has received critical acclaim. Crowbar (American Band)
Crowbar is an American sludge metal band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1990. The band is fronted by vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein, Crowbar's sole constant member. Through infusing a slow, low-keyed, brooding doom metal sound with the aggression of hardcore punk, they pioneered a style known as sludge metal – albeit Windstein admitted a mild dislike to the term – alongside other bands of the New Orleans heavy metal scene such as Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Acid Bath, and Down. History Origins (1988–1991) The band dates back to 1988, when Kirk Windstein joined the New Orleans hardcore punk band ShellShock. Sludge metal (also known as sludge or sludge doom) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that originated through combining elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is typically harsh and abrasive, often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos. The Melvins from the US state of Washington produced the first sludge metal albums in the mid-late 1980s. Characteristics The key characteristics of both sludge and doom metal are a slow tempo combined with down-tuned, heavily- distorted guitars to deliver the heaviest feel that is possible. Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Robb Flynn, who remains the only original member of the band. Tony Costanza
Tony Costanza (July 2, 1968 – August 4, 2020) was an American drummer, known for being the first drummer for the heavy metal band Machine Head, playing in the band from 1992 to 1993. Career Costanza received jazz lessons from Irv Kluger. Influenced by such drummers as Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan and Terry Bozzio, whom Tony considered his favorite drummer. Machine Head Costanza did two shows with Machine Head. A kegger/house party in Oakland, California and the first "official" Machine Head show in Las Vegas on August 29, 1992.
