Somerfield
Somerfield (; originally Gateway) was a chain of small to medium-sized supermarkets operating in the United Kingdom. The company also previously owned the Kwik Save chain of discount food stores. The company was taken over by the Co-operative Group on 2 March 2009 in a £1.57 billion deal, creating the UK's fifth-largest food retailer. The Somerfield name was replaced by the Co-operative brand in a rolling programme of store conversions ending in summer 2011. Gateway history The early years The company had its origins in a Bristol-based grocer known as J.H. Mills which was founded in 1875 and which developed a self-service supermarket chain named Gateway Foodmarkets in 1960. Kwik Save
Kwik Save is a British convenience store chain. Prior to 2007, it was also a discount supermarket chain that had shops across the United Kingdom. It went into administration in July 2007, but was brought back in April 2012. Its shops were small to medium-sized high street supermarkets, mainly located in areas with below average incomes. It struggled to make profits during the 2000s, as superstore operators such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's introduced their own budget brands, and foreign competitors such as Lidl, Aldi and Netto (who all arrived in the United Kingdom during the first half of the 1990s) expanded. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange, and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. Fine Fare was a chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom. Their Yellow Pack budget private label, own-label range, introduced in 1980, was the first Value brands in the United Kingdom, own brand basic ranges to be introduced in the UK. History The company began as one single supermarket in Welwyn Garden City in 1951, as an offshoot of the ''Welwyn Department Store'', owned by Howardsgate Holdings, the company of Ebenezer Howard, the founder of the garden city movement, garden city movement. It was one of a series of convenience store chains established in the 1950s, the others being Premier and Victor Value. International Tea Co. Stores was a leading chain of grocers based in London. It was an original constituent of the FT 30 index of leading companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. Alec Monk
David Alec George Monk (born 13 December 1942), known as Alec Monk, is a British businessman who is a former chairman and chief executive of the supermarket chain Gateway and former chairman of the brewing company Charles Wells Ltd. Life Monk was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, from 1962 to 1965, obtaining a degree in PPE. He was then part of the research staff on corporate finance and taxation at Sheffield University and the London Business School before working for Rio Tinto Zinc, becoming a director in 1974. Co-op Food is a brand used for the food retail business of The Co-operative Group in the United Kingdom. Prior to reintroducing the brand in 2016, the group used " The Co-operative" branding, which is still used by a number of consumers' co-operative societies in the UK. Fitch Lovell was a British food manufacturing, transportation, distribution and retail company with origins dating to 1784, and was finally merged into Booker Group in 1991 after they had purchased it in 1990 for £279.7 million. Early history Fitch Lovell started out in 1784, when James Fitch (1762–1818) opened a cheesemaking business in Leadenhall, London near to St Katherine Cree church, which since 1965 has hosted the Fitch Gardens (paid for by Fitch Lovell).
