Soleto
Soleto (Griko: ; Salentino: ; la, Soletum) is a small Griko-speaking city located in the province of Lecce in Apulia, Italy. The town has a total population of 5,542 and is one of the nine towns of Grecìa Salentina where the greek dialect Griko is spoken. History In the 5th century, Soleto was elevated to the seat of a bishopric of the Byzantine Rite. In the Middle Ages it was ruled by Count Gjon Kastrioti II (the Roman numeral is related to the Kastrioti dynasty), son of the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. In the 13th century the Angevine rulers of Naples chose the city as the capital of a county, later ruled by the Castro, Balzo, Orsini, Campofregoso, Castriota, Sanseverino, Carafa, and Gallarati-Scotti families, until feudal control was finally abolished in 1806. Matteo Tafuri
Matteo Tafuri (8 August 149213 June 1582) was an Italian philosopher, astrologer and physician, who was famed for his divination, but also was reputed to be a magician who practiced demonic arts. Biography Matteo Tafuri was born in Soleto, a small village in the south of Apulia, on 8 August 1492. In his early years he studied the Hellenic culture through the teachings of Sergio Stiso, a famous hellenist from Zollino, and later he devoted himself to philosophy and medicine in Naples. In 1525 in Padua he met Zimaria, an Aristotelian disciple of Pietro Pomponazzi and in Venice he proved his ability of divination to King Francis I of France. In the same year he went to England where he met Thomas More and the Archbishop Thomas Wolsey but there he was inquired for heresy. Then he studied philosophy and medicine in Paris at the Sorbonne, he attended the University of Salamanca in Spain and travelled through Africa, Poland and Greece. Kastrioti Family
The House of Kastrioti ( sq, Dera e Kastriotëve) was an Albanian noble family, active in the 14th and 15th centuries as the rulers of the Principality of Kastrioti. At the beginning of the 15th century, the family controlled a territory in the Mat and Dibra regions. The most notable member was Gjergj Kastrioti, better known as Skanderbeg, regarded today as an Albanian hero for leading the resistance against Mehmed the Conqueror's efforts to expand the Ottoman Empire into Albania.
