Socialist Party Of Thailand
The Socialist Party of Thailand (SPT) was a political party in Thailand, active in the 1970s. SPT was led by its general secretary Boonsanong Punyodyana. SPT won 15 out of 269 seats in the 1975 parliamentary elections. Boonsanong Punyodyana was murdered on 28 February 1976. Around 10,000 people attended his memorial service. After the Thammasat University massacre on 6 October 1976, many SPT cadre went into exile or joined the Communist Party of Thailand's guerrillas in the border areas with Laos in northern Thailand and Isan (northeastern Thailand). Boonsanong Punyodyana
Boonsanong Punyodyana ( th, บุญสนอง บุณโยทยาน; ) was a Thai politician and General secretary of the Socialist Party of Thailand. He was assassinated on February 28, 1976. Life and career After graduating from Chulalongkorn University in 1959, Boonsanong worked for the Thai government, preparing English translations of official manuals. His skill in English and his familiarity with the Thai governmental structure gained him employment with the United States Information Service (USIS) in Bangkok as a writer and researcher. In 1962, he won a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship to study for a master's degree in sociology at the University of Kansas. After receiving the MA, Boonsanong returned to Thailand where he joined the staff of Thammasat University as a lecturer in sociology. Admiral Sangad Chaloryu ( th, สงัด ชลออยู่; ; 4 March 1915 – 23 November 1980) was a Thai admiral and politician who served as head of the National Administrative Reform Council (NARC), a military junta that ruled Thailand from 1976 to 1980. Northern Thailand
Northern Thailand, or more specifically Lanna, is geographically characterised by several mountain ranges, which continue from the Shan Hills in bordering Myanmar to Laos, and the river valleys which cut through them. Though like most of Thailand, it has a tropical savanna climate, its relatively high elevation and latitude contribute to more pronounced seasonal temperature variation, with cooler winters than the other regions. The Communist Party of Thailand ( Abrv: CPT; th, พรรคคอมมิวนิสต์แห่งประเทศไทย, ) was a communist party in Thailand active from 1942 until the 1990s. Initially known as the Communist Party of Siam, the party was founded officially on 1 December 1942, although communist activism in the country began as early as 1927. In the 1960s, the CPT grew in membership and support and by the early 1970s was the second largest communist movement in mainland Southeast Asia (after Vietnam). The party launched a guerrilla war against the Thai government in 1965. Even though the CPT suffered internal divisions, at its political peak the party effectively acted as a state within the state. Thammasat University Massacre
The 6 October 1976 massacre, or the 6 October event ( th, เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา ) as it is known in Thailand, was a violent crackdown by Thai police and lynching by right-wing paramilitaries and bystanders against leftist protesters who had occupied Bangkok's Thammasat University and the adjacent Sanam Luang, on 6 October 1976. Prior to the massacre, thousands of leftists, including students, workers and others, had been holding ongoing demonstrations against the return of former dictator Thanom Kittikachorn to Thailand since mid-September. Official reports state that 46 were killed (on both sides) and 167 were wounded, while unofficial reports state that more than 100 demonstrators were killed.
