Social Democratic Group (Switzerland)
The Social Democratic Group (, , , abbreviated S) is the second largest parliamentary group in the Swiss Federal Assembly. It is formed by the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. The Social Democratic Party were represented in the National Council; they sat as part of the Social-Political group with the democrats from 1896 then formed their own parliamentary group in 1911. National Council (Switzerland)
The National Council (german: Nationalrat; french: Conseil national; it, Consiglio nazionale; rm, Cussegl naziunal) is the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, the upper house being the Council of States. With 200 seats, the National Council is the larger of the two houses. Adult citizens elect the council's members, who are called National Councillors, for four year terms. These members are apportioned to the Swiss cantons in proportion to their population. Both houses meet in the Federal Palace of Switzerland in Bern. Organisation With 200 members, the National Council is the larger house of the Swiss legislature. When the Swiss federation was founded in 1848, the number of seats was not yet fixed, and was thus determined by the population of the individual cantons. Pierre Graber
Pierre Graber (6 December 1908 – 19 July 2003) was a Swiss politician and member of the Swiss Federal Council (1970–1978). He was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and after studying law in Neuchâtel and Vienna he became attorney-at-law in Lausanne. Active in the Social Democratic Party, he was in the municipal parliament of Lausanne (1934–1946), member of the parliament of the canton of Vaud (1937–1946), mayor of Lausanne (1946–1949), member of the National Council (1942–1969, except 1963), he was the Speaker of that Assembly from 1965/66, he sat in the Foreign affairs committee and was deputy chairman of the enquiry parliamentary committee dealing with the ''Mirage'' affair. Ursula Wyss (born 8 February 1973 in Davos) is a Swiss politician and economist. She represented the Canton of Bern in the Swiss National Council as member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) from 6 December 1999 to 3 March 2013. Early life and education Born and raised in the municipality of Davos in the Canton of Graubünden, Ursula Wyss is citizen of the Bernese municipalities of Buchholterberg and Köniz. Ursula Mauch (née Widmer; born 29 March 1935) is a Swiss chemist, educator and politician who served on the National Council (Switzerland) from 1979 to 1995. She was the first female member to represent the Canton of Aargau constituency. She previously served on the Grand Council of Aargau from 1974 to 1980 for the Social Democratic Party. She is the mother of Corine Mauch, who currently serves as Mayor of Zurich. René Felber (14 March 1933 – 18 October 2020) was a Swiss politician. He was a member of the Swiss Federal Council from 1987 to 1993. In 1992, he served as the President of Switzerland.
