Rafael Arias-Salgado
Rafael Arias-Salgado (26 January 1942, Madrid) is a Spanish politician. The son of Gabriel Arias-Salgado, a minister under Franco and brother of Fernando Arias-Salgado : a former head of the Spanish TV company and a diplomat. He qualified as a lawyer, was a deputy for the UCD for Toledo from 1977–1982, serving as Minister of relationships within the Cortes (1979–1980), Minister to the President of the Cortes (1980–1981) and minister of territorial administration (1981–1982). After the disbandment of the UCD he dedicated himself to private business. He was president of the security company Prosegur (1983–1985). In 1987 he joined the UCD splinter party the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS) and represented that party as deputy for Madrid (1990–1992). The Union of the Democratic Centre (, UCD, also translated as "Democratic Centre Union") was an electoral alliance, and later political party, in Spain, existing from 1977 to 1983. 1977 Spanish General Election
The 1977 Spanish general election was held on Wednesday, 15 June 1977, to elect the Spanish Cortes of the Kingdom of Spain. All 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as all 207 seats in the Senate. It was the first free election held in Spain since 1936, prior to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was called by Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez as part of the political reform of the Francoist regime, ongoing since shortly after Francisco Franco's death in 1975 and promoted by his successor, King Juan Carlos I. Its aim was to elect a Constituent Cortes that was to draft a new constitution, which would ultimately lead to the repealing of the Fundamental Laws of the Realm and the culmination of the country's transition to democracy.
