SoFA District
SoFA (South of First Area) is an arts, cultural, and entertainment district of Downtown San Jose, California. Home to numerous cultural institutions, art galleries, and theatre companies, including the Institute of Contemporary Art San José, the San José Opera, and the Silicon Valley Symphony, SoFA bills itself as "Silicon Valley's Creative District". History The commercial street had been a major retail district of San Jose in the late 1800s and early part of the 20th century, but by the 1970s had fallen into decline along with much of downtown San Jose as the city expanded and retail moved to suburban shopping centers. By the late 1970s, it had become a red light district overrun with adult movie theaters and street prostitution. The adult businesses were zoned out in the late 1980s under an initiative spearheaded by then-downtown councilwoman Susan Hammer. Movimiento De Arte Y Cultura Latino Americana
Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA) is a contemporary arts space focused on the Chicano and Latino experience and history, located in the SoFA district at 510 South First Street in San Jose, California. The museum was founded in 1989, in order to encourage civic dialog and social equity. The current programming includes visual art, performing and literary arts, youth arts education, and a community art program. The space has two performing arts spaces, a gallery and the MACLA Castellano Playhouse and they frequently host poetry readings and film screenings. Parque De Los Pobladores
Parque de los Pobladores is a park in the SoFA District of Downtown San Jose, California. History In 1997, the Monument to the Founding of the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was erected in the park. The monument, designed by the East Los Streetscapers, commemorates the city's founders that came on Anza Expedition of 1776 that established the city as the California's first civilian settlement. The park was redeveloped in 2012 to its current state, as part of the city's ''Pavement to Plaza'' program. In 2017, an art installation called "Urban Rooms" was installed at the park, designed by Estudio Teddy Cruz + Forman. WORKS/San José is a nonprofit, member-run art space, located in the SoFA district of San Jose, California. It was founded in 1977 by community members. History WORKS/San José began in October 1977, by a group of artists and San Jose State University faculty and students in downtown San Jose. Early members of WORKS/San José include: Tony May, Erin Goodwin Guerrero, Ruth Tunstall Grant, Jan Rindfleisch, George Rivera, Rebecca Schapp, Anna Koster, Fred Shepard, Albert Dixon. WORKS/San José was originally an offshoot of the short lived MERZ gallery and Wordworks, started by Jessica Jacobs, the then San Jose State University gallery director. Jacobs was instrumental in the establishment of the nonprofit status and acquisition of the initial space.
