Snow Camp, North Carolina
Snow Camp is an unincorporated community in southern Alamance County, North Carolina, United States, noted for its rich history and as the site of the Snow Camp Outdoor Theater. The community has a large Quaker population centered on the pre-revolutionary era Cane Creek Friends Meeting. The community was founded by Quaker Simon Dixon ''circa'' 1750 after visiting the area and purchasing 500 acres from the British Government for 252 pence. Through The Earl of Granville, he led a revolt against the British Government because of unfair taxation, not by fighting but by bankrolling the cause. After the Battle of Guilford Court House in Guilford County, North Carolina, General Cornwallis of the British Government won but was injured in the Guilford Court House Battle, led by General Nathanael Greene of the Revolutionaries. Herman Husband
Herman Husband (1724–1795), also known as Harmon Husband, was a farmer, radical, pamphleteer, author, and preacher. He is best known as a leader of The Regulators, a populist rebellion in the Carolinas in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War. Snow Camp Mutual Telephone Exchange Building is a historic telephone exchange building located at Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina. It was built in 1915, and is a small, square, vernacular, two-story frame structure. It has a pyramidal roof and rests on a stone foundation. One-story gabled wings were added in 1927 when the building was converted into a dwelling. A one-story kitchen addition was built in 1986. The building housed the switchboard, operator, and company telephone equipment. Friends Spring Meeting House
Spring Friends Meeting House is a historic Quaker meeting house located at Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina. The fourth and current meeting house was built in 1907, and is a small rectangular frame one-story gable-front building. It features Gothic Revival style lancet windows and a short, plain rectangular cupola with pyramidal roof. Spring Friends Meeting is an active congregation of Quakers from the Alamance, Chatham, Orange, Guilford and Randolph County area of North Carolina. Members of the Religious Society of Friends first started "meeting at the spring" around 1761, with the congregation formally recognized by North Carolina Yearly Meeting in 1773. The adjacent contributing cemetery dates from the founding of the meeting, about 1761. Battle Of Lindley's Mill
The Battle of Lindley's Mill (also known as the Battle of Cane Creek) took place in Orange County, North Carolina (now in Alamance County), on September 13, 1781, during the American Revolutionary War. The battle took its name from a mill that sat at the site of the battle on Cane Creek, which sat along a road connecting what was then the temporary state capital, Hillsborough, with Wilmington, North Carolina. Background On September 12, 1781, loyalist militia under the command of militia colonels David Fanning and Hector McNeill captured Governor Thomas Burke and thirteen high-ranking Whig officials in a daylight raid on Hillsborough on September 12, 1781.
