Smithville-Sanders is a census-designated place (CDP) encompassing the communities of Smithville and Sanders in Monroe County, Indiana, United States. Its population was 3,323 as of the 2020 census. Geography Smithville-Sanders is located in southern Monroe County. The village of Smithville is in the north-central part of the CDP around the intersection of Smithville Road and Strain Ridge Road, while Sanders is to the north on Fairfax Road. Most of the CDP consists of rural and semi-suburban land surrounding the two villages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has an area of , all of it land. It is bordered to the south and east by portions of Monroe Lake, a reservoir on Salt Creek. State Road 37 (SR 37) is a major route in the U.S. state of Indiana, running as a four-lane divided highway for 110 miles of its course. At one time, the route ran from the southwest corner of the state to the northeast corner. In the pre-Interstate Highway era, Indiana 37 was the most direct route between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Interstate 69 has supplanted it as a through route, and State Road 37 now consists of two disconnected segments. The longer segment starts at Tell City on the Ohio River and ends in Marion in north central Indiana. Salt Creek (White River Tributary)
Salt Creek is a stream in the southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. A tributary of the East Fork of the White River, the creek begins in southwestern Bartholomew County, flows through southern parts of Brown and Monroe counties, and meets the White River just downstream from Bedford in Lawrence County. In far southwestern Brown County and much of southern Monroe County, the creek flows through Monroe Lake, which was created by damming the creek in 1965. A major tributary of Salt Creek is Clear Creek, which drains most of the city of Bloomington. Besides the street runoff from Bloomington, Clear Creek also brings with it the effluent from the city's Dillman Road Wastewater Treatment Plant. Salt Creek, according to data collected from the years 1956–2001 at the USGS station at Harrodsburg, Indiana, has a mean annual discharge of 495 cubic feet per second. Monroe Lake
Monroe Lake is a reservoir located about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Bloomington, Indiana, United States. The lake is the largest entirely situated in Indiana with of water surface area spread over the counties of Monroe and Brown. Capacity varies from to depending on water level.
