''Smith's Wives'' is a 1935 British comedy film directed by H. Manning Haynes and starring Ernie Lotinga, Beryl de Querton and Tyrell Davis. A farcical situation occurs when a vicar and a bookmaker with the same surname are mistaken for each other. It was based on the play ''Facing the Music'' by James Darnley. A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception). Comedy is one of the oldest genres in film and it is derived from the classical comedy in theatre. Some of the earliest silent films were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. When sound films became more prevalent during the 1930s, comedy films took another swing, as laughter could result from burlesque situations but also dialogue. Ernie Lotinga
Ernest Lotinga (19 March 1875 – 28 October 1951) was a British comedian and film actor. Lotinga became known for the Josser character whom he portrayed in a series of comedy films during the 1930s. Biography Lotinga was born in Sunderland into a middle class Jewish family of partly Danish origin. His father was a respected community leader who part-financed the local synagogue. Ernest left school early and moved to London, where he worked as a baker's assistant and was able to watch music hall performances by Dan Leno and others. He began his stage career by performing Leno's sketches, under the stage name Dan Roe (or Roy), and by the late 1890s developed a strong reputation in his own right as a comedic talent. Richard Ritchie (born May 2, 1955 in Mineral Wells, Texas) is a former American football quarterback who played college football for Texas A&I from 1973 to 1976. During his career, Ritchie had an undefeated record of 39–0. After winning in his only start during his freshman year of 1973, Texas A&I won three consecutive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I national championships. Between passing and running, he scored 59 touchdowns in his career; he also served as a placekicker for Texas A&I.
