Slovo (album)
''Slovo'' (russian: Слово, A Word) is the sixth full-length album by the Russian pagan metal band Arkona. It was released on 26 August 2011 through Napalm Records. An academical choir and a chamber orchestra were used on the album. Reception A review by the webzine Jukebox Metal called the album "imaginative and lively" but criticised a lack in musical consistency and identity. ''Metal Hammer'' Germany was more positive and lauded the evolution in the band's musical quality, writing that the songs were more complex and sophisticated than those on the previous studio album ''Goi, Rode, Goi!''. Arkona (band)
Arkona (russian: Аркона) is a Russian folk metal band. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Russian folklore and Slavic mythology, and their music incorporates several traditional Russian musical instruments. The name of the band "Arkona" refers to the last Pre-Christianized Slavic city-castle. History The band was founded in February 2002 by two members of Dolgoprudny Slavic Neopaganism Society: Masha "Scream" Arkhipova and Alexander "Warlock" Korolyov, originally as Giperboreya (Гиперборея – Hyperborea). At the end of 2002 the group (featuring also Evgeny Knyazev on guitar, Evgeny Borzov on bass and Olga Loginova on keyboards, and now as Arkona) entered the Moscow CDM Studios. Sputnikmusic is an American music community website offering music criticism and music news alongside features commonly associated with wiki-style websites. Hurdy-gurdy
The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses ''tangents''—small wedges, typically made of wood—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible. Most hurdy-gurdies have multiple drone strings, which give a constant pitch accompaniment to the melody, resulting in a sound similar to that of bagpipes. For this reason, the hurdy-gurdy is often used interchangeably or along with bagpipes. Maria Arkhipova (russian: link=no, Мари́я Архи́пова; born 9 January 1983), known by her stage name as Masha Scream, is a Russian metal musician from Moscow. She is the founder, vocalist and main songwriter of the folk metal band Arkona. She has also played in other bands such as Nargathrond. Russian Fist Fighting
Russian boxing (russian: Кулачный бой, Kulachniy Boy, fist fighting, pugilism) is the traditional bare-knuckle boxing of Rus' and then Russia. Boxers will often train by punching buckets of sand to strengthen bones, and prepare minutes before the fights. History The earliest accounts concerning the sport date to the 13th century. Supposedly, fist fighting was practiced even prior to the Christianization of Kievan Rus', at celebrations dedicated to Perun. Metropolite Kiril, in 1274, created another one of many personally-instituted rules, declaring expulsion from Christianity for any of those who fist-fight and do not sing a prayer or hymn at the burial of someone who died during a fist fight. Leshy
The Leshy (also Leshi; rus, леший, p=ˈlʲeʂɨj; literally, " efrom the forest", pl, borowy, leśnik, leśniczy, lasowik, leszy) is a tutelary deity of the forests in pagan Slavic mythology. As the spirit rules over the forest and hunting, he may be related to the Slavic god Porewit. There is also a deity, named ''Svyatibor'' (''Svyatobor'', ''Svyatibog''), who is mentioned in the beliefs of the Eastern and Western Slavs as the god of forests and the lord of the leshies. His functions were identical to those of the god Veles. The Leshy is masculine and humanoid in shape, is able to assume any likeness and can change in size and height. Arkaim
Arkaim (russian: Аркаим) is an archaeological site, dated to 2050-1900 BCE, of an ancient fortified settlement, belonging to Sintashta culture, situated in the steppe of the Southern Urals, north-northwest of the village of Amursky and east-southeast of the village of Alexandrovsky in the Chelyabinsk Oblast of Russia, just north of the border with Kazakhstan. It was discovered in 1987 by a team of archaeologists which later came under the leadership of Gennady Zdanovich. The realization of its importance unprecedentedly forestalled the planned flooding of the area for a reservoir. Goi, Rode, Goi!
''Goi, Rode, Goi!'' (russian: Гой, Роде, Гой!) is the fifth full-length album by the Russian pagan metal band Arkona. It was released on 28 October 2009 through Napalm Records. "Goy, Rode, Goy!" means "Hail, Rod, Hail!". Rod is the Slavic Great God, Father of the Universe. The album has a large cast of guest vocalists and musicians, most notably on the track "Na Moyey Zemle" which features vocalists from Månegarm of Sweden, Obtest of Lithuania, Menhir of Germany, Skyforger of Latvia, and Heidevolk of the Netherlands. Each sings in their native language, playing the role of warriors from that region describing their homeland to a traveler. The album is one of the band's few releases on limited edition double-LP, released in a hand-numbered edition of 500. The album is packaged in a gatefold with plain white inner sleeves and pressed in Germany.
