Sloan (band)
Sloan is a Canadian rock band based in Toronto but is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sloan has released thirteen full-length albums and has received nine Juno Award nominations, winning one. Between 1996 and 2016, Sloan was among the top 75 best-selling Canadian artists in Canada and among the top 25 best-selling Canadian bands in Canada. The band is known for their sharing of songwriting and lead vocals from each member of the group and their unaltered line-up throughout their career. History Formation (1986–1991) Chris Murphy was introduced to Jay Ferguson through Matt Murphy in 1986. The three played together in a band called "The Deluxe Boys". ''Peppermint EP'' is the debut EP released by Canadian rock band Sloan. It was released on their own label, Murderecords, in 1992. The EP was recorded at Sound Market Studios in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada by Terry Pulliam, who also engineered the recording. Three songs – "Marcus Said", "Underwhelmed", and "Sugartune" – were also included on the band's first full-length album, ''Smeared''; "Underwhelmed" was entirely re-recorded, while "Marcus Said" and "Sugartune" were remixed versions of the original ''Peppermint'' recordings. Jennifer Pierce of Jale provides additional backing vocals on two songs, "Marcus Said" and "Torn". The cover is a photo of Jason Larsen, a friend of the band's, after whom the band is named. Larsen was originally called "Slow One" by his French-speaking boss, a nickname which, when said in the boss' French accent, sounded more like "Sloan". MCA Records was an American record label owned by MCA Inc., which later became part of Universal Music Group. Pre-history MCA Inc., a powerful talent agency and a television production company, entered the recorded music business in 1962 with the purchase of the New York-based US Decca Records (established in 1934), including Coral Records and Brunswick Records. MCA was forced to exit the talent agency business in order to complete the merger. Nettwerk Music Group is the umbrella company for Nettwerk Records, Nettwerk Management, and Nettwerk One Publishing. "Underwhelmed" is the debut single by Canadian alternative rock band Sloan. The song was originally released on the DTK Records compilation ''Hear and Now '92: The Best Of The East Coast's Independent'' in 1992 and was later included on the band's debut EP, ''Peppermint''. A music video was released of the ''Peppermint'' version. The song was re-recorded for the band's debut full-length album, ''Smeared'', and was released as the album's lead single. The song is the band's best-charted single outside Canada, peaking at #25 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1993. Matt Murphy (Canadian Musician)
Matt Murphy is a Canadian musician and actor. He is perhaps best known as the vocalist and guitarist of 1990s band The Super Friendz. Music career Murphy first achieved notability for his role as leader of the mid-1990s Halifax band The Super Friendz, a power pop act that became a prominent part of the Halifax music scene, which at that time was often referred to as "Seattle north". Murphy formed the band with fellow King's College students Charles Austin (bass) and Drew Yamada (guitar). The three shared singing and songwriting duties, as was common in the democratically oriented scene at the time, but Murphy emerged as the standout performer.
