Slingsby Railway Station
Slingsby railway station is a disused railway station that served the village of Slingsby in North Yorkshire, England. It was built on the orders of the Earl of Carlisle, the local landowner, opened in 1853 and closed to regular passenger trains on 1 January 1931, but remained open for freight traffic and occasional special passenger trains until 10 August 1964. The station was the only one on the Thirsk and Malton line to be built of stone. Slingsby, North Yorkshire
Slingsby is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about west of Malton, North Yorkshire, Malton on the B1257 road. According to the 2001 Census had a population (including Fryton) of 634, increasing to 665 at the 2011 Census. History The village is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'' as "Selungesbi" in the "Maneshou hundred". It was part of the Hovingham manor, but some land was owned by ''Orm, son of Gamul'' at the time of the Norman invasion. The York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR) was an English railway company formed in 1847 by the amalgamation of the York and Newcastle Railway and the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. Both companies were part of the group of business interests controlled by George Hudson, the so-called ''Railway King''. In collaboration with the York and North Midland Railway and other lines he controlled, he planned that the YN&BR would form the major part of a continuous railway between London and Edinburgh. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. Hovingham Railway Station
Hovingham Spa railway station was located just north of the village of Hovingham in the Ryedale area of North Yorkshire, England and opened in 1853. Regular passenger service ceased in 1930 but freight traffic and occasional special passenger trains continued until complete closure on 10 August 1964. It was part of the Thirsk and Malton (T&M) rail route, which paralleled today's B1257 road from Hovingham to Malton. The station had a single platform on the ''up'' side of the line, which was originally very low, but which was in 1865 partially raised to the NER standard height of 2' 6". The station offices were incorporated in the stationmaster's house, a two-storey brick building.
