Slingsby Channel
Slingsby Channel is a strait on the north side of Bramham Island in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast of British Columbia. It is one of only two entrances to Seymour Inlet and the associated maze of waterways inland, which lie to the northeast of Bramham. The other entrance is Schooner Channel, formerly Schooner Passage, on the east side of that island. The Fox Islands (British Columbia), Fox Islands, which lie in its entrance, Bramham Island and the channel itself, plus Slingsby Rock and Slingsby Point, are named in association with Bramham Park, the Yorkshire home of George Lane-Fox (MP), George Lane-Fox. Through the Slingsby Channel flows the world's strongest current, the Nakwakto Rapids, that has been measured at speeds up to 18.4 miles per hour. Strait
A strait is an oceanic landform connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. The surface water generally flows at the same elevation on both sides and through the strait in either direction. Most commonly, it is a narrow ocean channel that lies between two land masses. Some straits are not navigable, for example because they are either too narrow or too shallow, or because of an unnavigable reef or archipelago. Straits are also known to be loci for sediment accumulation. Usually, sand-size deposits occur on both the two opposite strait exits, forming subaqueous fans or deltas. Bramham Island
Bramham Island is an island in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, on the north side of the entrance to that strait. It lies in the entrance to the maze of waterways inland to the northeast, focused on Seymour Inlet, which includes Belize Inlet and Allison Harbour and Nugent Sound, though it is flanked only by Slingsby Channel on its north, and Schooner Channel (formerly Schooner Passage) on its east. To its west are the open waters at the convergence of Queen Charlotte Sound (Canada), Queen Charlotte Sound and Queen Charlotte Strait. About 23 km2 in size, it is mostly low-lying hills and has a number of freshwater lakes. Seymour Inlet
Seymour Inlet is one of the lesser travelled of the principal inlets of the British Columbia Coast. Unlike larger inlets such as Knight or Bute, it is not flanked by mountains but by relatively low, but still rugged, coastal hill-country and forms a maze of complex, narrow waterways and tidal pools and lagoons. It is located within a corresponding maze of peninsulas on the mainland on the northwest side of the Queen Charlotte Strait region. Its main arm is in length from the mouth of the Seymour River to the mouth of its north arm, Belize Inlet, which is about in length and has its own side inlets, narrow waterways named Wentworth Sound and Alison Sound. The Fox Islands are a small group of islands in the entrance to Slingsby Channel in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. Bramham Park
Bramham Park is a Grade I listed 18th-century country house in Bramham, between Leeds and Wetherby, in West Yorkshire, England. The house, constructed of magnesian limestone ashlar with stone slate roofs in a classical style, is built to a linear plan with a main range linked by colonnades to flanking pavilions. The main block is of three storeys with a raised forecourt. The house is surrounded by a 200 ha (500 acre) landscaped park ornamented by a series of follies and avenues laid out in the 18th-century landscape tradition, surrounded by 500 ha (1235 acres) of arable farmland. Bramham park is used annually for the Leeds Festival. History The Baroque mansion was built in 1698 for Robert Benson, 1st Baron Bingley. It has remained in the ownership of Benson's descendants since its completion in 1710. He died with no male heirs and the barony was extinguished. George Lane-Fox (MP)
George Lane-Fox (4 May 1793 – 15 November 1848), of Bramham Park, Yorkshire, was a British landowner and Tory politician. Lane-Fox was the son of James Fox-Lane, of Bramham Park, Yorkshire, by the Honourable Mary Lucy, daughter of George Pitt, 1st Baron Rivers. He was the brother of Sackville Lane-Fox and the uncle of Sackville Lane-Fox, 12th Baron Conyers, and Augustus Pitt Rivers. He inherited Bramham Park, near Wetherby but moved to Bowcliffe Hall after Bramham Hall was severely damaged by fire in 1828. Lane-Fox was returned to parliament for Beverley in 1820, a seat he held until 1826 and again between 1837 and 1840. His brother Sackville Lane-Fox succeeded him in 1840. Lane-Fox died in November 1848, aged 55. He had married Georgiana Henrietta, daughter of Edward Percy Buckley, of Minestead Lodge, Hampshire, in 1814. They had one son and two daughters.
