Slanguage (album)
''Slanguage'' is the third collaborative studio album by Awol One and Daddy Kev. It was released on Mush Records on March 18, 2003. It features contributions from D-Styles. Critical reception Rob Theakston of AllMusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5, saying, "it's probably the closest fusion of free improv jazz and hip-hop that's ever been committed to disc." He called it "a record that requires intense concentration and immediate attention in order for everything to make sense." Dave Heaton of '' PopMatters'' said, "''Slanguage'' finds Awol One and Daddy Kev taking a schizophrenic approach to MCing and DJing, switching everything up constantly, while creating a continuous mood that makes the album feel more like one piece of music than a collection of songs." Daddy Kev
Kevin Marques Moo (born 1974), better known by his stage name Daddy Kev, is an American DJ, Grammy Award-winning audio engineer, record producer and executive from Los Angeles, California. He is the owner of Alpha Pup Records and the founder of Low End Theory. As an audio engineer, Daddy Kev has mixed and mastered albums by Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, and Leon Bridges. Early life Daddy Kev was born and raised in the Harbor City neighborhood of Los Angeles. As a child, he played piano and trumpet. At the age of 13, he started playing turntables. He graduated from Narbonne High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from University of California, San Diego. Mush Records is an American independent record label. It was founded by Robert Curcio and Cindy Roché in 1997. History Originally known as Dirty Loop Music, Mush Records started out as a recording studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, with the label formed as an outlet to release music that was being made in the studio. Alternative Hip Hop
Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music that encompasses a wide range of styles that are not typically identified as mainstream. AllMusic defines it as comprising " hip hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk." Alternative hip hop developed in the late 1980s and experienced a degree of mainstream recognition during the early-to-mid 1990s. While some groups such as Arrested Development and The Fugees managed to achieve commercial success before breaking up, many alternative rap acts tend to be embraced by alternative rock listeners other than hip-hop or pop audiences.
