Skeena Crossing
Gitsegukla (also Kitsegeucla or Skeena Crossing) is a Gitxsan community of about 500 at the confluence of the Kitseguecla and Skeena Rivers, approximately 40 km southwest of Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada. The community is on Gitsegukla Indian Reserve No. 1. History The original village was located below the present day graveyard near the Skeena River. The village was destroyed in 1872 when a party of miners on their way to Omineca failed to extinguish their camp fire. The result was a significant confrontation that was only resolved when the Lieutant-Governor travelled on war-ship, HMS Scout, to meet the Gitsegukla chiefs at Metlakatla. Skeena Mountains
The Skeena Mountains, also known as the Skeenas, are a subrange of the Interior Mountains of northern British Columbia, Canada, essentially flanking the upper basin of the Skeena River. They lie just inland from the southern end of the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, and also of the northern end of the Kitimat Ranges (another subrange of the Coast Mountains). Their southern limit is described by the Bulkley River (a major tributary of the Skeena; its valley and that of the lower Skeena River are used by BC Highway 16) and the upper northwestern reaches of Babine and Takla Lakes, and on their northeast by the upper reaches of the Omineca River. Skeena River
The Skeena River is the second-longest river entirely within British Columbia, Canada (after the Fraser River). Since ancient times, the Skeena has been an important transportation artery, particularly for the Tsimshian and the Gitxsan—whose names mean "inside the Skeena River" ,and "people of the Skeena River," respectively. The river and its basin sustain a wide variety of fish, wildlife, and vegetation, and communities native to the area depend on the health of the river. The Tsimshian migrated to the Lower Skeena River, and the Gitxsan occupy territory of the Upper Skeena. During the Omineca Gold Rush, steamboat services ran from the sea to Hazelton, which was the jumping-off point for the trails to the goldfields. Skeena—Bulkley Valley is a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. Geography This is a mostly wilderness area comprising almost the entire northwestern quarter of British Columbia, including the islands of Haida Gwaii and the large region inland from the Alaska Panhandle. This district includes the cities of Terrace and Prince Rupert, the town of Smithers, as well as the districts of Kitimat, Hazelton, New Hazelton, Stewart, Port Edward, Houston and the villages of Masset, Burns Lake, Granisle, Telkwa and Port Clements. Skeena was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 2004. Geography This was a rural, mostly wilderness, riding in northwestern B.C. It consisted of the northwest corner of the province of British Columbia, including the towns of Prince Rupert, Smithers and Terrace, and Haida Gwaii. History This riding was created in 1914 from parts of Comox—Atlin. It was first used in the 1917 federal election. The district was abolished in 2003.
