Sir James Grant, 8th Baronet
Sir James Grant of Grant, 8th Baronet, (19 May 1738, Moray – 18 February 1811, Castle Grant) was a Scottish landowner, politician and Chief of Clan Grant. He went by the nickname of ''the good Sir James''. Life Grant was the son of Sir Ludovick Grant, 7th Baronet, and Lady Margaret Ogilvy, daughter of the statesman James Ogilvy, 1st Earl of Seafield. Born in Moray, Scotland, he was educated at Westminster School and Christ's College, Cambridge. Grant succeeded his father as Member of Parliament for Elginshire in 1761, a seat he held until 1768. In 1773 Grant succeeded his father as eighth Baronet of Colquhoun. In 1783 he was a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and served as its first Physical President. From 1790 to 1795 he was MP for Banffshire. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Inverness-shire. He was colonel of a fencible regiment, the Grant Fencible Regiment raised in 1793. Haltoun House
Haltoun House, or Hatton House (or occasionally Argile House), was a Scottish baronial mansion set in a park, with extensive estates in the vicinity of Ratho, in the west of Edinburgh City Council area, Scotland. It was formerly in Midlothian, and it was extensively photographed by '' Country Life'' in September 1911. Proprietors The earliest known proprietor John de Haltoun sold the property on 26 July 1377 when Robert II confirmed it upon a court favourite, Alan de Lawedre of Whitslaid, Berwickshire. Alan and his first wife, Alicia, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell of Lochawe, already owned (1371) the adjoining lands of Norton. George de Lawedre of Haltoun, Provost of Edinburgh, Alan's second son by his second wife, Elizabeth, was put in fee of Haltoun in 1393. He died in 1430 and left only daughters as co-heirs. Colquhoun Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Colquhoun ("Cohoon"), one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia (1625) and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain (1786). The second baronetcy in 1786 was created to rectify confusion over the first. However, a third branch of the family, the Colquhouns of Tillyquhoun, also continued to assert themselves as baronets until their extinction in 1838. Francis Ogilvy-Grant, 6th Earl Of Seafield
Francis William Ogilvy-Grant, 6th Earl of Seafield (6 March 1778 – 30 July 1853) was a Scottish nobleman, a Member of Parliament and is listed as the 25th Chief of The Clan Grant. The names Grant and Ogilvie The family of Grant of Grant, on succeeding in 1811 to the Earldom of Seafield, first adopted the surname of Grant-Ogilvie, otherwise Grant-Ogilvy. This order was later reversed, so that Lord Cassillis' history, 'The Rulers of Strathspey' (1911) names the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Earls as Grant-Ogilvie but all their successors from Sir James, 9th Earl, as Ogilvie-Grant. David McDowall-Grant
David McDowall Grant (20 July 1761 – 27 June 1841), of Arndilly, Banff and Barr House, Lochwinnoch, was a Scottish naval officer, collector of customs and, briefly, Member of Parliament. He was the 5th surviving son of William McDowall, Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire from 1768 to 1774, and Elizabeth Graham. His eldest brother, William McDowall, was also a Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire, Ayrshire and the Glasgow Burghs, and another elder brother, Hay MacDowall was a Lieutenant General and General Officer Commanding, Ceylon . In 1790 he married Eleanor Mary, daughter and heir of Col. Alexander Grant of Arndilly, taking the additional name of Grant. He was returned as Member of Parliament for Banffshire in 1795 following the resignation of Sir James Grant, but is not recorded as having spoken or voted, and did not seek election at the 1796 general election. James Ferguson (Scottish Politician)
James Ferguson FRSE (25 May 1735 – 6 September 1820) was a Scottish advocate and Tory politician and the third Laird of Pitfour, a large estate in the Buchan area of north east Scotland, which is known as the 'Blenheim of the North'. Ferguson studied law in Edinburgh, qualifying in 1757 to gain membership of the Faculty of Advocates. He then undertook a tour of Europe throughout 1758 before following in his father's footsteps by joining the Scottish legal profession. Later in life his interests turned to politics and he became a Scottish Tory politician. Among the extensive work carried out by Ferguson at Pitfour, he is also credited with beginning work on a canal between the Pitfour estate and the sea at Peterhead in order to transport agricultural produce. Earl of Seafield is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1701 for James Ogilvy, who in 1711 succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Findlater. The earldoms of Findlater and Seafield continued to be united until 1811, when the earldom of Findlater became dormant, while the earldom of Seafield remains extant. History The first Earl of Seafield's branch of the Ogilvy family descended from Sir Walter Ogilvy, whose brother Sir John Ogilvy was the ancestor of the Earls of Airlie. Grant Or Strathspey Fencibles
The plan of raising a fencible corps in the Highlands was first proposed and carried into effect by William Pitt the Elder, (afterwards Earl of Chatham) in the year 1759. During the three preceding years both the fleets and armies of Great Britain had suffered reverses, and it was thought that a "home guard" was necessary as a bulwark against invasion. In England county militia regiments were raised for internal defence in the absence of the regular army; but it was not deemed prudent to extend the system to Scotland, the inhabitants of which, it was supposed, could not yet be safely entrusted with arms because of The 'Fifteen' and The 'Forty-Five' rebellions. James Lind (naturalist)
James Lind FRS FRSE FRCPE (1736–1812) was a Scottish natural philosopher and physician. Life James Lind was born in Gorgie, Edinburgh on 17 May 1736. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University under William Cullen and Joseph Black, and graduated in 1768. In 1766, he then joined the East India Company as surgeon. In 1768 he received his doctorate (MD) from Edinburgh upon completing a dissertation on marsh fever (malaria) in Bengal. On 6 November 1770 he was admitted a Fellow of the College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Lind was also a corresponding member of the Lunar Society.
