''Singles 1963–1965'' is a box set compilation of the singles and EPs by The Rolling Stones spanning the years 1963 to 1965. Part of a series of repackages by ABKCO Records, who licence The Rolling Stones' 1963–1970 recorded works, ''Singles 1963–1965'' is the first of three successive volumes to commemorate their non-LP releases during this era. While the set features faithful replicas of all individual single covers (even the CDs are reproduced in black), the set—and both its successors—came under some criticism as to their necessity, especially as 1989's '' Singles Collection: The London Years'' included eighteen of this set's thirty-two songs. However, ''Singles 1963-1965'' is notable for the first ever CD editions of The Rolling Stones' three British EPs released by Decca Records in 1964 and 1965, reinstating what had been long sought-after recordings to the band's catalogue. The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Active for six decades, they are one of the most popular and enduring bands of the rock era. "You Better Move On" is a 1961 rhythm and blues song by Arthur Alexander. It reached number 24 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in March 1962. Versions by Billy "Crash" Craddock, George Jones and Johnny Paycheck were hits on the Country charts. Arthur Alexander version The lyrics were inspired by Alexander's real life situation, in which his girlfriend and future wife already had a boyfriend. Alexander said of the situation "When I met her out of high school he was still hanging in there. His family was pretty well off. I didn't have no money but I knew she liked me. It was a small town and people would be talking. That's where I got the idea for the song. I didn't talk to him personally. I said it in song." Berry Gordy III (born November 28, 1929), known professionally as Berry Gordy Jr., is a retired American record executive, record producer, songwriter, film producer and television producer. He is best known as the founder of the Motown record label and its subsidiaries, which was the highest-earning African-American business for decades. Money (That's What I Want)
"Money (That's What I Want)" is a rhythm and blues song written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, which was the first hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise. Barrett Strong recorded it in 1959 as a single for the Tamla label, distributed nationally on Anna Records. Many artists later recorded the tune, including the Beatles in 1963, the Rolling Stones in 1964, and the Flying Lizards in 1979. Composition and recording The song developed out of a spontaneous recording session at the Hitsville studio A in Detroit. Gordy and Strong began by improvising on piano and vocals and were joined by Benny Benjamin on drums and Brian Holland on tambourine. ''The Rolling Stones'' is the debut EP released by the Rolling Stones on 10 January 1964. History It was released both to capitalise on their first Top 20 hit "I Wanna Be Your Man" and to test the commercial appeal of the band before their UK label Decca Records would commit to letting them record an album. ''The Rolling Stones'' includes four songs recorded at two separate sessions in August and November 1963. ''The Rolling Stones'' features R&B covers of some of the band's favourite artists, and some recent American hits. Impact Sound is officially listed as the EP's producer. Nanker Phelge
Nanker Phelge (a.k.a. Nanker/Phelge) was a collective pseudonym used between 1963 and 1965 for several Rolling Stones group compositions. Stones bassist Bill Wyman explained the origins of the name in his 2002 book, ''Rolling with the Stones'': Thus anything credited to Nanker Phelge refers to a Mick Jagger/Brian Jones/Keith Richards/ Charlie Watts/ Bill Wyman/Andrew Loog Oldham collaborative composition. The ASCAP files for the very earliest Nanker Phelge compositions also list early Rolling Stones member Ian Stewart (also known as "the sixth Stone") as a co-author covered by the pseudonym. The name resurfaced in the late 1960s on the labels of the original vinyl pressings of '' Beggars Banquet'' and ''Let It Bleed''. "Stoned" was released in the United Kingdom by the Rolling Stones on the Decca label on 1 November 1963, as the B-side to their version of "I Wanna Be Your Man". Recorded in early October 1963, it was the first song released to be credited to " Nanker Phelge", and the band's first original composition, derivative of "Green Onions" by Booker T. & the M.G.s. Lennon–McCartney was the songwriting partnership between English musicians John Lennon (1940–1980) and Paul McCartney (born 1942) of the Beatles. It is the best-known and most successful musical collaboration ever by records sold, with the Beatles selling over 600 million records worldwide as of 2004. "I Wanna Be Your Man" is a Lennon–McCartney-penned song first recorded and released as a single by the Rolling Stones, and then recorded by the Beatles. The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney, and finished by Lennon and McCartney in the corner of a Richmond club while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were talking. The Rolling Stones version Released as their second single on 1 November 1963, the Stones' version was the group's first UK top-20 hit, peaking at number 12 on the British chart.
