''Singing a Song'' is a 1979 album by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. It was released in December and was their final album for Pye Records after several years with the label. Background The album was released on Pye Records in December 1979 and was their final album with the label. Pye Records was about to fold at this point, and this album was released to finish their contract and was made up of previously unreleased and rare material. With minimal promotion and the group not having had a hit single for over a year, the album failed to chart. The album featured no singles in the UK, but track "Singing a Song" was released as a single in Spain. Tracks "The Circus Came to Town" and "Got a Funny Feeling" had been released in Europe as B-Sides in 1977 and 1976 respectively. Brotherhood Of Man
Brotherhood of Man are a British pop group who achieved success in the 1970s. They won the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with " Save Your Kisses for Me". Created in 1969 by songwriter and record producer Tony Hiller, Brotherhood of Man was initially an umbrella title for a frequently-changing line-up of session singers. Early on, they scored a worldwide hit with the song " United We Stand". By 1973 the concept had run its course and Hiller formed a definite four-member line-up consisting of Martin Lee, Lee Sheriden, Nicky Stevens and Sandra Stevens. This version of the group went on to score many hits around the world in the mid to late 1970s including "Kiss Me Kiss Your Baby", "Angelo", " Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In)" and " Figaro". Middle of the road (also known by its acronym MOR) is a commercial radio format and popular music genre. Music associated with this term is strongly melodic and uses techniques of vocal harmony and light orchestral arrangements. The format was eventually rebranded as soft adult contemporary. Pye Records
Pye Records was a British record label. Its best known artists were Lonnie Donegan (1956–1969), Petula Clark (1957–1971), the Searchers (1963–1967), the Kinks (1964–1971), Sandie Shaw (1964–1971), Status Quo (1968–1971) and Brotherhood of Man (1975–1979). The label changed its name to PRT Records (distributing as Precision Records & Tapes) in 1980, before being briefly reactivated as Pye Records in 2006. History The Pye Company originally manufactured televisions and radios. Its main plant was situated off what used to be Haig Road, in Cambridge, and it entered the record business when it bought Nixa Records in 1953. Tony Hiller
Anthony Toby Hiller (30 July 1927 – 26 August 2018) was an English songwriter and record producer. He was best known for writing and/or producing hits for Brotherhood of Man, including " United We Stand" (1970) and "Save Your Kisses for Me" (1976). Biography The eldest of eight children, he was born in Bethnal Green, East London, England. Along with other staff and students from his Jewish Free School in Kenton, London, he was evacuated to Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1939. He began his musical career as a member of the song and dance duo The Hiller Brothers, sharing the stage with his brother Irving. ''Higher Than High'' is a 1979 album released by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. It was released in June and contained four singles. Background The album was released in June 1979 on Pye Records. It featured four singles, "Middle of the Night", "Goodbye Goodbye", "Papa Louis" and "Taxi" but failed to chart. "Middle of the Night" had already appeared on the group's Greatest Hits compilation released some months earlier and was the only single to chart. At the time the group had a regular spot on the Rolf Harris show, ''Rolf on Saturday, OK?'', where they sang several songs from the album (namely "Papa Louis", "Middle of the Night", "Taxi", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Olé Olé"). ''Good Fortune'' is a 1980 album by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. The album was recorded on manager Tony Hiller's label, Dazzle Records, but went unreleased in the UK. The album did get a release however in Australia and New Zealand on RCA Records. Today the album is virtually impossible to get hold of and is considered to be the 'holy grail' among fans. Background The album featured the singles "Honey Don't Throw Our Love Away" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", which were the first two singles released on Hiller's Dazzle label following their departure from Pye Records at the end of 1979. Track "Sugar Mouse" was released as a single in the Netherlands. Also included on the album was a cover version of the song "You're the Greatest Lover", which had been a million-seller in Europe for the Dutch group Luv', but was unknown in the UK. Lee Sheriden
Lee Sheriden (born Roger Pritchard; 11 April 1944 in Horfield, Bristol) is an English singer/songwriter and musical director, best known as a member of pop group Brotherhood of Man. Early career As a child, Roger Pritchard learned the piano and later took up the guitar when he joined his first group at the age of 14. This group appeared on the television talent show Carroll Levis Discoveries but he later found his way into other groups. After he left school he became a resident musician at the ''Top Rank'' Ballroom in Bristol (now renamed ''The Works'') for four years. In the early 1970s he embarked on a career as a songwriter. This brought him to the attention of Tony Hiller, who was looking for songwriters for his publishing company. Sandra Stevens
Sandra Stevens (born 23 November 1944, Leeds, Yorkshire) is an English singer and member of pop group Brotherhood of Man. Early career Sandra Stevens first entered into a singing career in the 1960s when she joined the club band, The Track (who then changed their name to The Nocturnes). The group was formed by drummer Ross Mitchell and among the six members Stevens sang vocals alongside Eve Graham (later of The New Seekers). Based in Manchester, the band played local clubs, performing pop hits of the day such as "The Loco-Motion" and "Da Doo Ron Ron". In early 1967 Stevens decided to leave the group and was replaced by Lyn Paul (also later of The New Seekers). Over the next few years she sang with the big bands of Joe Loss and Ken MacKintosh and also joined another group, Jason Flocks. Nicky Stevens
Nicky Stevens (born Helen Maria Thomas in Carmarthen, Wales, 3 December 1949) is a singer, famous as a member of pop group Brotherhood of Man. She is the only Welsh person to have won the Eurovision Song Contest. Early career Nicky Stevens began singing at an early age. At the age of four she was singing in a chapel in Carmarthen, and following lessons eventually joined the Hywel Girls Choir. She also studied classical music as a singer and pianist. At the age of 16 she held a residency in Swansea's Townsman nightclub. During this period she also took on a job as a telephone operator. This lasted for nine months and is the only job she has ever had outside the entertainment business. She later toured the Continent as a singer, performing in night clubs. Martin Lee (singer)
Martin Lee (born 26 November 1946) is an English singer-songwriter, best known as a member of the pop group Brotherhood of Man. Early career Lee was born Martin Barnes in Purley, Surrey, but spent five years of his youth in Australia. As a teenager, he had a great interest in music and after learning to play guitar he formed his first band. In the early 1970s, he came to the attention of songwriter and publisher Tony Hiller, while he was working as lead singer with the Johnny Howard Band. Hiller signed him up to his company, Tony Hiller Music initially as a writer. On discovering that he could sing as well, he asked him to be part of the group he managed, Brotherhood of Man.
