Singapore League Cup
The Singapore League Cup was an annual soccer competition in Singapore. It was launched in 2007, and was open to teams who play in the S.League. The 2007 competition was sponsored by SingTel, and officially titled the SingTel League Cup. Eight of the twelve S.League teams took part in the 2007 tournament, which was held before the start of the S.League season proper. In 2008, the competition's official sponsored name was the Avaya-J&J League Cup (with sponsorship coming from Avaya and Jebsen & Jessen Communications). All twelve S.League teams took part in the 2008 tournament. Unlike the 2007 event, the 2008 competition was held during the S.League season. The 2009 edition of the League Cup was held from 1 to 19 June, again during the S.League season. The competition began with a group stage, where the clubs were divided into four groups of three. Albirex Niigata Singapore FC
Albirex Niigata Singapore FC, abbreviated as Albirex Niigata (S), is a Singaporean football club that plays in the Singapore Premier League. The club is a satellite team of Albirex Niigata of Japan. History Albirex Niigata Singapore, a satellite team of Japanese club Albirex Niigata, joined the S. League in 2004. It was in that year the Football Association of Singapore decided to invite foreign teams in the league in a bid to deal with poor attendance issues. For the first years of the club's participation in the league it has settled in the mid-table in the standings. In 2008, Daisuke Korenaga became chairman of the club who introduced reforms in the club in order to improve its standing in the league. 1997 Singapore League Cup
The 1997 edition of the Singapore League Cup was a football tournament involving the teams in the S.League. It was renamed the Singapore Cup in 1998. The Singapore League Cup launched in 2007 is a different competition. This first edition of the competition would feature nine teams drawn into three groups of three teams, playing on a home and away basis. The group winners and best runner-up would qualify for the semi-finals. SAFFC would win the championship defeating Geylang United 1:0 in the final. 2009 Singapore League Cup
The 2009 Singapore League Cup kicked off on 1 June. For this season, the 12 teams will be divided into four groups of three in the preliminary round which will be played on a round-robin basis. The top two teams from each group qualify for the next round which will be played on a knockout (single elimination) basis. Young Lions Football Club, commonly known as Young Lions, is a Singaporean developmental football club that competes in the Singapore Premier League. The team is under the direct control of the Football Association of Singapore. The Young Lions are one of the few football clubs in the world which place an age restriction on team members while playing in a top-flight professional league. The Young Lions plays their league matches at the Jurong West Stadium. Their best S.League finish was third, which they achieved in 2004 and 2006. Super Reds Football Club was a South Korean professional football club which played as a foreign team in Singapore's S.League between 2007 and 2009. History The creation of the club in 2007 was driven by the Korean community in Singapore. The 2008 Singapore League Cup marks the second occasion on which the Singapore League Cup competition has been staged. (The event was launched in 2007). Its official sponsored name for 2008 is the Avaya- J&J League Cup. In 2007, the event was held before the start of the S.League season (and serving as a pre-season warm-up tournament), and was won by Woodlands Wellington FC. However, in 2008, the event is being held during the S.League season. All 12 S.League teams have entered the 2008 competition. The cup is being played over four rounds. The top four teams in the S.League in 2007 were given a bye to the Quarter-Final stage. The final will be played on 16 June at Jalan Besar Stadium. Lion City Sailors Football Club, commonly referred to as The Sailors or LCS, is a Singaporean professional football club competing in the Singapore Premier League, the top tier of the Singapore football league system. Gombak United Football Club was a professional Football (soccer), football club which competed in the S.League, the top division of football in Singapore. The club was based in Bukit Gombak. During the early years of the S. League, Gombak United played their home games at Bukit Gombak Stadium before moving to Jurong West Stadium in 2006 until they dissolved in 2012. Woodlands Wellington FC
Woodlands Wellington Football Club is an inactive professional football club which played in the S.League, the top division of football in Singapore. They are based in Woodlands at the 4,300 seater Woodlands Stadium, where they have played since their establishment. Woodlands Wellington FC's honours include winning the inaugural Singapore League Cup in 2007, defeating Sengkang Punggol FC 4–0 in the final. They also finished runners-up in the Singapore FA Cup in 1997, and also in the Singapore Cup in 2005 and 2008 and won the President's Centennial Cup in 1998, a cup competition organized by the Philippine Football Federation to celebrate the centennial of Philippine Independence by defeating Hong Kong Rangers FC 2–1 in the final in Bacolod.
