Singapore Democratic Alliance
The Singapore Democratic Alliance (abbreviation: SDA) is a political coalition between the National Solidarity Party (NSP) and Singapore Justice Party (SJP) in Singapore. History Prior to the founding in 2001, then-opposition Member of Parliament (MP) for Potong Pasir Chiam See Tong was a member of Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Chiam resigned to join Singapore People's Party (SPP) ahead of the 1997 elections due to a leadership schism with another member, Chee Soon Juan, who was made the party's secretary-general. The party was first established in 2001 by Chiam where he want to provide a common grouping under which different opposition parties could stand as a political coalition in elections against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). Desmond Lim
Desmond Lim Bak Chuan ( zh, s=林睦荃, p=Lín Mùquán; born 1967) is a Singaporean politician. He was formerly the president of the opposition Singapore Justice Party (SJP), which joined forces with three other opposition parties ( SPP, NSP and PKMS) to form the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) in 2001. He became the SDA secretary-general in 2009 and SDA president in 2011 before stepping down from the position of SDA chairman after the 2020 general election. Formerly a principal engineer at telco company M1, Lim made his electoral debut in the 2001 general election when he joined a five-member SDA team to contest in Jalan Besar GRC against a five-member team from the governing People's Action Party (PAP). Cheo Chai Chen
Cheo Chai Chen ( zh, s=蒋才正, p=Jiǎng Cáizhèng) is a Singaporean former politician and businessman. He won the constituency of Nee Soon Central and served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency from 1991 to 1997, when he was a member of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Biography Cheo is a graduate of Nanyang University, where he studied in the Department of Government and Public Administration. Cheo first stood for Parliament at the 1988 general election, where he was defeated by Ng Pock Too of the governing People's Action Party (PAP) in Nee Soon Central. Ng won 57.6% of the votes in the constituency to Cheo's 38.5% (with a third candidate taking 3.9%). At the 1991 general election, Cheo again stood against Ng in Nee Soon Central. The Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in Central and Western Singapore. The five divisions consists: Buona Vista, Queenstown, Moulmein-Cairnhill, Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru and Henderson-Dawson. Punggol East Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. Following the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review committee report for the 2020 general elections, Punggol East SMC was merged into the 4-member Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Sitoh Yih Pin
Sitoh Yih Pin ( zh, s=司徒宇斌, p=Sītú Yǔbīn; born 1963) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Potong Pasir SMC since 2011. An accountant by profession, Sitoh entered politics in the 2001 general election as a PAP candidate contesting against opposition Chiam See Tong, who had been representing Potong Pasir SMC since 1984, and lost with 47.57% of the vote against Chiam's 52.43%. He lost to Chiam again in the 2006 general election, but managed to win against Lina Loh, Chiam's wife, in the 2011 general election with 50.36% of the vote against her 49.64%. Lina Loh Woon Lee ( zh, s=罗文丽, p=Luó Wénlì; born 1949), also known as Lina Chiam, is a Singaporean former politician. She was previously a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament between 2011 and 2015 and was the committee member of Singapore People's Party since 2019. A former member of the opposition Singapore People's Party (SPP), she contested in the 2011 and 2015 generel election in Potong Pasir SMC, but lost to the governing People's Action Party's Sitoh Yih Pin in both elections. The Reform Party (abbreviation: RP) is a political party in Singapore. The Reform Party is a liberal- democratic party. According to the party's constitution, it seeks to promote "political, social and economic reform; the restoration of full human rights; a fairer and just distribution of wealth with the elimination of poverty; an independently appointed judiciary and a fully elected and sovereign parliament". 2011 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day. This election also marked the first and the only three-cornered fight since 2001 in Punggol East SMC before it increased to four-cornered fight on a by-election held two years later.
