Simojovel is one of the 119 municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. As of 2010, the municipality had a total population of 40,297, up from 31,615 as of 2005. It covers an area of 446.99 km2. The municipality had 145 localities, the largest of which (with 2010 populations in parentheses) were: Simojovel de Allende (10,762), the municipal seat classified as urban, and Pueblo Nuevo Sitala (2,437), La Pimienta (1,755), El Jardín (1,626), La Ceiba (1,275), Las Maravillas (1,204), and Constitución (1,103), classified as rural. Economy Until 1990, the majority of the population worked on the harvest of coffee, but today mining and the Chiapan amber trade are the most important economic activities. Chiapan Amber
Mexican amber, also known as Chiapas Amber is amber found in Mexico, created during the Early Miocene and middle Miocene epochs of the Cenozoic Era in southwestern North America. As with other ambers, a wide variety of taxa have been found as inclusions including insects and other arthropods, as well as plant fragments and epiphyllous fungi. Context Mexican amber is mainly recovered from fossil bearing rocks in the Simojovel region of Chiapas, Mexico. It is one of the main minerals recovered in the state of Chiapas, much of which is from 15 to 23 million years old, with quality comparable to that found in the Dominican Republic. Chiapan amber has a number of unique qualities, including much that is clear all the way through and some with fossilized insects and plants. Chiapas is a state in Southwest Mexico. According to the 2020 Mexican Census, it has the eighth largest population of all states with inhabitants and the 10th largest by land area spanning .
