Silver City Historic District (Idaho)
The Silver City Historic District is a historically significant mining area in northwestern Owyhee County, Idaho, United States. It includes the abandoned town of Silver City and numerous nearby towns, mines, and mining remains, covering approximately . Along with Silver City, it encompasses the communities of Ruby City, Boonsville, Dewey, and Fairvlew, along with major silver mines on War Eagle Mountain and Florida Mountain. Owyhee County ( ) is a county in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,133. The county seat is Murphy, and its largest city is Homedale. In area it is the second-largest county in Idaho, behind Idaho County. Owyhee County is part of the Boise metropolitan area and contains slightly more than half of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, which extends over the Nevada border, into Elko County. The majority of the federally recognized Shoshone-Paiute Tribe that is associated with this reservation lives on the Nevada side; its tribal center is in Owyhee, Nevada. Jordan Valley, Oregon
Jordan Valley is a city in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Ontario, OR– ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies along Jordan Creek, a tributary of the Owyhee River; the creek is named for a 19th-century prospector, Michael M. Jordan. The population was 181 at the 2010 census. History Indigenous peoples Northern Paiute people were the first in the area, frequenting nearby mountains and streambeds to find or follow food sources. When early settlers arrived, conflict developed over local resources, eventually escalating to the Snake War. The conflict lasted from 1864 to 1868 and left two thirds of the Paiutes dead, with those that remained sent to a reservation. Silver City, Idaho
Silver City is a ghost town in northwestern Owyhee County, Idaho, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). At its height in the 1880s, it was a gold and silver mining town with a population of around 2,500 and approximately 75 businesses. Description Silver City served as county seat of Owyhee County from 1867 to 1934. Today, the town has about 70 standing buildings, all of which are privately owned. Many of the owners are third- or fourth-generation descendants of the original miners. There are a handful of small businesses, but no gas or service stations. The property is now owned by the federal government, overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. Silver City was founded in 1864 soon after silver was discovered at nearby War Eagle Mountain (elev. ). Dewey, Idaho
Dewey is a ghost town in Owyhee County, Idaho, United States. History The town was settled in 1863 and named "Booneville", after its first inhabitant, Captain Boone. Booneville was at first very prosperous, but then fell into decay. In 1896, the property at Booneville and its hotel were purchased by Colonel W.H. Dewey, superintendent of the Florida Mountain Mining Company. Dewey's company erected a mill, and a mine was located nearby. The town had a butcher shop, general store, steam laundry, livery stable and barn, and a large hotel, the Hotel Dewey. "Nothing had been neglected in the way of making the town complete as to conveniences for its inhabitants". A post office was established in 1897, and was named "Dewey". Within a few years, there was a decline in mining, and the hotel had burned down. The town was soon abandoned. All that remains of Dewey is a large cement powerplant building, and the mine dump.
