Silvain (opera)
''Silvain'' (spelt ''Sylvain'' in the 1771 libretto) is a one-act '' opéra-comique'' by André Grétry with a libretto by Jean-François Marmontel. It was first performed at the Comédie-Italienne (the Opéra Comique) on 19 February 1770 and was one of Grétry's biggest early successes. The plot concerns Silvain, who works as a poor farmer after being disinherited by his rich father for marrying a lower-class woman. The pastoral theme and its celebration of rural life was common in ''opéra-comique'' of the time but Marmontel's libretto goes much further in advocating social equality and defending the rights of peasants against the encroachment of landowners. Background Marmontel's chief source was ''Erast'', a one-act play by the Swiss writer Salomon Gessner, who enjoyed a considerable European vogue at the time. Silvanus (or ''Sylvanus''; french: Silvain, Sauvan, Salvan, Souvain) of Ahun is venerated as a martyr and saint. According to the tradition, Silvanus was a deacon who was killed by Vandals at the battle of ''Agedunum'' or ''Acitodunum'' ( Ahun) on 16 October 407. Veneration The antiquity of his cult is based on the fact that there was an ancient tomb said to carry his relics; the tomb rests in the crypt of the 12th-century church of Saint-Silvain d’Ahun. In a wood panel dating from 1639, he is depicted dressed in a dalmatic, bearing a book and a palm. Eugène Silvain
Eugène-Charles-Joseph Silvain (17 June 1851 - 21 August 1930) was a French stage actor, pensionnaire of the Comédie française, sociétaire then dean of the compagny from 1878 to 1928. Biography He left the army to devote himself to opera. He made his debut in Algeria, then played Beaumarchais in Paris. He was received at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique, and later admitted at the Comédie-Française where he was very successful. In 1883, he became sociétaire of the Comédie-Française. Silvain only had one film acting role, two years before his death, but his appearance as Pierre Cauchon in Carl Theodor Dreyer's classic ''The Passion of Joan of Arc'' earned him a small spot in film history. He married , a tragedian with a brilliant career at the théâtre de l'Odéon, then at the Comédie-Française.
