Silvain (opera)
''Silvain'' (spelt ''Sylvain'' in the 1771 libretto) is a one-act '' opéra-comique'' by André Grétry with a libretto by Jean-François Marmontel. It was first performed at the Comédie-Italienne (the Opéra Comique) on 19 February 1770 and was one of Grétry's biggest early successes. The plot concerns Silvain, who works as a poor farmer after being disinherited by his rich father for marrying a lower-class woman. The pastoral theme and its celebration of rural life was common in ''opéra-comique'' of the time but Marmontel's libretto goes much further in advocating social equality and defending the rights of peasants against the encroachment of landowners. Background Marmontel's chief source was ''Erast'', a one-act play by the Swiss writer Salomon Gessner, who enjoyed a considerable European vogue at the time. French opera is one of Europe's most important operatic traditions, containing works by composers of the stature of Rameau, Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc and Messiaen. Christiane Karg (born 6 August 1980) is a German operatic soprano. The award-winning singer became known for performing Mozart roles at the Salzburg Festival, and made an international career. Career Born in Feuchtwangen, Bavaria, Karg studied at the Mozarteum, voice with Heiner Hopfner and ''Lied'' with Wolfgang Holzmair. She studied the Italian repertory for half a year at the conservatory of Verona. She graduated at the Mozarteum in 2008 and was awarded the Lilli Lehmann Medal. Marie-Thérèse Laruette (1744 –1837) was a French opera singer and playwright from Paris. She was a member of the troupe of the Comédie-Italienne, with which the Opéra-Comique was merged in 1762. He was the younger brother of the musician Jean-Claude Trial (1732–1771) and husband of soprano Marie-Jeanne Milon, stage name Félicité Mandeville (1746–1818).
