Silja Hauksdóttir
Silja Hauksdóttir (born ) is an Icelandic writer and film director. After studying philosophy at the University of Iceland, Silja took courses in screenwriting, directing and cinematography at FAMU in Prague and Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam. She wrote the book ''Dís'' with Birna Anna Björnsdóttir and , and later directed the full-length film ' in 2004, which was nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize. Silja directed the award-winning TV series ', along with ' and ''Sisterhood''. ''Sisterhood'' was the first Icelandic programme to be included in the streaming service Walter Presents. She was also chosen to direct two editions of ''Áramótaskaupið'' – "The New Year's Lampoon" – in 2008 and 2014. Her second full-length film, ''Agnes Joy'', was released in 2019, for which she won the Edda Award for Best Film (''Kvikmynd ársins''). All 4 is a video on demand service from the Channel Four Television Corporation, free of charge for most content and funded by advertising. The service is available in the UK and Ireland; viewers are not required to have a TV licence—required for live viewing and the BBC iPlayer on-demand service—when watching on-demand services. The Edda Award is an accolade bestowed annually by the Icelandic Film and Television Academy, and is the most prominent film and television award in Iceland, awarded annually in February. The ''Edda'' has awarded for outstanding work in various categories of film and television annually since 1999,Kvikmyndir órjúfanlegur hluti sagnaarfsins Morgunblaðið, 20 October 1999, p. 60 (in Icelandic) except in 2009 due to the economic crash the year before. Agnes Joy
''Agnes Joy'' is a 2019 Icelandic drama film directed by Silja Hauksdóttir. It was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. Plot Rannveig finds herself grappling with burnout in every facet of her ordinary suburban existence. Her job is a source of frustration, and her marriage is gradually deteriorating. Additionally, she engages in constant battles with her defiant daughter, Agnes, and is daunted by the prospect of Agnes maturing and moving on. The arrival of a new neighbor, Hreinn, at their doorstep ushers in fresh challenges that are completely unforeseen and uncontrollable for Rannveig and her family. Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) (pronounced or ) ( en, 'The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service') is Iceland's national public-service broadcasting organization. Operating from studios in the country's capital, Reykjavík, as well as regional centres around the country, the service broadcasts an assortment of general programming to a wide national audience via three radio stations: Rás 1 and Rás 2, also available internationally; Rondó (only available via the Internet and digital radio); and one full-time television channel of the same name. ''Áramótaskaupið'' ("The New Year's Lampoon") is an annual Icelandic television comedy special, broadcast on New Year's Eve by the state public service broadcaster RÚV. Initially aired on radio, and later moving to television, it features sketches satirizing the news events of the past year. It is often the highest-rated television broadcast of the year in Iceland. In 2002, it was reported that the special had been seen by 95.5%; CEO Páll Magnússon, CEO of RÚV stated that this was most likely a record in the Western world. Due to its high viewership, advertising time during ''Áramótaskaupið'' is the most expensive on Icelandic television. The show ends just before midnight, and those Icelanders who shoot off fireworks usually do so after ''Áramótaskaupið'' ends. Walter Presents is a video-on-demand service of the UK's Channel 4, part of its All 4 online platform. Launched on 3 January 2016, it specialises in foreign-language drama and comedy with English subtitles. It is named after Walter Iuzzolino, who selects its content.
