Silda (Sogn Og Fjordane)
Silda is an island in Kinn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island is located northeast of the large island of Vågsøy in the Sildagapet bay and about west of the island of Barmøya. Silda sits about east of the small village of Langenes and about northeast of Raudeberg, both on the island of Vågsøy. This island is the site of the 1810 Battle of Silda. In 2014, there were 12 inhabitants on the island, which is only accessible by boat. Name The name of the island comes from the Norwegian language word ''sild'' which means herring, since herring fishing has been important in the region for centuries. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk. The county is one of two counties in Norway that have Nynorsk as their official written language form (the others are neutral as to which form people use). Vestland was created in 2020 when the former counties of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane (with the exception of Hornindal municipality, which became part of Volda municipality in Møre og Romsdal county) were merged. Battle Of Silda
Battle of Silda (''Affæren ved Silden'' or ''Affæren ved Stadt'') was a naval battle fought on 23 July 1810 between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Denmark–Norway near the Norwegian island of Silda in Sogn og Fjordane county. The battle occurred during the Gunboat War, itself part of the Napoleonic Wars. In the battle, two British frigates captured or destroyed three or four Dano-Norwegian gunboats. The Danish-Norwegian and British accounts of the battle differ. Danish-Norwegian account The Dano-Norwegian Navy had based three gun-schooners ''Odin'', ''Thor'', and ''Balder'', and the gun-barge ''Cort Adeler'' at the pilot station on Silda. Fishing
Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are often caught as wildlife from the natural environment, but may also be caught from stocked bodies of water such as ponds, canals, park wetlands and reservoirs. Fishing techniques include hand-gathering, spearing, netting, angling, shooting and trapping, as well as more destructive and often illegal techniques such as electrocution, blasting and poisoning. Herring
Herring are forage fish, mostly belonging to the family of Clupeidae. Herring often move in large schools around fishing banks and near the coast, found particularly in shallow, temperate waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans, including the Baltic Sea, as well as off the west coast of South America. Three species of ''Clupea'' (the type genus of the herring family Clupeidae) are recognised, and comprise about 90% of all herrings captured in fisheries. Norwegian ( no, norsk, links=no ) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is an official language. Along with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a dialect continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional varieties; some Norwegian and Swedish dialects, in particular, are very close. Kunnskapsforlaget () is a Norwegian publishing company based in Oslo. Kunnskapsforlaget was established in 1975, as a partnership between H. Aschehoug & Co. (W. Nygaard) and Gyldendal Norsk Forlag. The purpose was to co-operate on publishing encyclopaedias and dictionaries. The first volume of Store norske leksikon (SNL) was published in 1978. Raudeberg
Raudeberg is a village in Kinn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the east side of the island of Vågsøy. The villages of Refvika, Vedvika, and Langeneset are located a few kilometers to the north, and the town of Måløy is about to the south. The island of Silda is located about offshore to the northeast of the village of Raudeberg. Nord-Vågsøy Church is located on the eastern edge of the village, right along the coast. Raudeberg (historically spelled ''Rødberg'') was the administrative centre of the former municipality of Nord-Vågsøy, which existed from 1910 until 1964. Barmøya
Barmøya or Barmen is a small island in Stad Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies just off the mainland between the Stad peninsula and the island of Vågsøy. Most of the island's 50 or so residents live on the southern shore in a small village that is known as Barmen. There is a small car ferry that runs from Barmen to the mainland to the south.
