Silas Arngna'naaq
Silas Arngna'naaq is a retired politician from Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada and former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. He served as the Minister of Renewable Resources for the Government of the Northwest Territories. Arngna'naaq was elected to the Kivallivik electoral district in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He defeated two term incumbent Gordon Wray to win the Kivallivik electoral district. Arngna'naaq ran for a second term in office in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election but was defeated by candidate Kevin O'Brien. Baker Lake, Nunavut
Baker Lake (Inuktitut syllabics: ᖃᒪᓂᑦᑐᐊᖅ 'big lake joined by a river at both ends', Inuktitut: ''Qamani'tuaq'' 'where the river widens') is a hamlet in the Kivalliq Region, in Nunavut on mainland Canada. Located inland from Hudson Bay, it is near the nation's geographical centre, and is notable for being Nunavut's sole inland community. The hamlet is located at the mouth of the Thelon River on the shore of Baker Lake. The community was given its English name in 1761 from Captain William Christopher who named it after Sir William Baker, the 11th Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. History In 1916, the Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post at Baker Lake, followed by Anglican missionaries in 1927. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police had been in the area for fifteen years before establishing a post at Baker Lake in 1930. In 1946 the population was 32, of which 25 were Inuit. Kevin J. O'Brien (born October 26, 1955) is a Canadian politician. Born in Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia, O'Brien is a union negotiator, former civil servant and a former municipal and territorial level politician who has served as a Member of both the Northwest Territories Legislature and the Nunavut Legislature. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2000 to 2004. Biography O'Brien was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. Gordon Wray (politician)
Gordon Wray (21 September 1951 Ayrshire, Scotland - 17 June 2009 Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) was a former territorial level politician from Northern Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1983 until 1991. Wray was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, winning a by-election held in the Keewatin North electoral district in 1982. Keewatin North was abolished a year later, and he then ran in the new Kivallivik electoral district in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election and was returned for his second term. In his second term Wray was appointed to the cabinet, serving numerous portfolios.
