Sigitas Geda (full name - Sigitas Zigmas Geda; 4 February 1943 – 12 December 2008) was a Lithuanian poet, translator, playwright, essayist, critic and a member of the Lithuanian independence movement, Sąjūdis, and of the Lithuanian parliament, Seimas. Life Early life Sigitas Geda was born in the village of Paterai, in the Lazdijai district of Lithuania, to Zigmas Geda and Aleksandra Gedienė. He was the fourth of seven children. Education and career Geda studied history and philology at Vilnius University. His collection ''Pėdos'' (Footprints) was published in 1966. He was also a leading figure in the ''Movement for the Support of Perestroika'' or Sąjūdis. For a time Geda withdrew from public life in the independent Lithuania because of his dislike of corruption and infighting. Geda's poetry has been translated into English by Kerry Shawn Keys. Sigitas Parulskis (born February 10, 1965 in Obeliai, Rokiškis) is a Lithuanian poet, essayist, playwright and reviewer. In 1990 he graduated from Vilnius University, where he studied Lithuanian language and literature. He has written for notable journals and newspapers in Lithuania (''Literatūra ir menas'', ''Lietuvos aidas'', ''Lietuvos rytas'', ''Šiaurės Atėnai''). Sigitas Tamkevičius (born 7 November 1938) is a Lithuanian prelate and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop emeritus of Kaunas. Pope Francis raised him to the rank of cardinal on 5 October 2019. Biography He graduated from secondary school in Seirijai in 1955 and entered the Kaunas Priest Seminary. He spent several years in the military service in the Soviet Army and then continued his theology studies, graduating from the seminary in 1962. He was ordained priest by Bishop Petras Maželis on 18 April 1962. He ministered as vicar in the parishes of Alytus, Lazdijai, Kudirkos Naumiestis, Prienai, Simnas. In 1968 he entered the Society of Jesus, which was then illegal under Soviet law.
