Shu Yang
Shu Yang (; born 1969) is a Chinese painter, performance artist, photographer and curator who was born in Xi'an, China. He studied at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Art, where he received his BA in art in 1993 and his master's degree in 1996. He initially taught fine art at the Tianjin Institute of Urban Construction, before becoming an independent curator in 1999. He moved to Beijing and in 2000, in collaboration with Chinese artist Zhu Ming and Chen Jin, set up the first performance art festival in China known as the Open Art Festival. In 2001 they curated the notorious festival of performance art in Cheng Du which was reported on Chinese television and in the press. It attracted the unwelcome attentions of the Chinese authorities. Painting
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. Chapter Arts Centre
Chapter Arts Centre (often just referred to as Chapter) is an arts centre in Canton, Cardiff, Wales, opened in 1971. Description Chapter hosts films, plays, performance art and live music, and includes a free art gallery, café and bars. There are also over 60 work spaces, used for an eclectic range of purposes including Chapter's own training courses. Twenty percent of the centre's income comes from the film theatres. Kira O'Reilly is a performance artist based in the UK. She graduated from Cardiff School of Art in 1998, and has participated in a number of performance art festivals throughout the UK and Europe, including at the Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent University 1998, the National Review of Live Art, in Glasgow (1998, 2001, 2003), at Arnolfini in Bristol, at Home in London and at several European festivals including Break 21 Festival, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2002 and ANTI - Contemporary Art Festival 2003, Kuopio, Finland. Hayley Newman
Hayley Newman is a London-based artist and Reader in Fine Art, who was born in Guildford, Surrey, in 1969. She is known for her work in performance art which has been exhibited since the early 1990s at venues including Tate Modern, the Ikon Gallery, the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. She teaches at Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. In 20042005 she was the Helen Chadwick Fellow at the British School in Rome. JJ Xi
Cai Yuan and Jian Jun Xi are two Chinese-born artists, based in Britain, who work together under the name Mad For Real. They have enacted (unofficial) events at the Venice Biennale and the Turner Prize, where, in 1999, they jumped onto Tracey Emin's '' My Bed'' installation. Originally finding fame as performance artists specialising in art intervention, they have since diversified, engaging in numerous works in both Asia and Europe. Yang Zhichao
Yang Zhichao (; born 1963) is a multi-disciplinary artist who is known for his agonizingly painful performance pieces. Biography Yang was born in Gansu Province, China, in 1963. He graduated from the Art Department of Northwest Normal University in 1987. When he moved from rural Gansu to Beijing in 1998, he became aware of globalisation and the power it exerts over the body. Compared to rural Gansu where the body was a tool required for labour, in Beijing the body could be seen as hard-drive embellished with the products of industry. In this new environment, Yang's artistic practice began to take form. In his performance works, the artist used his body to raise social issues and how, in an age of science and technology, our bodies no longer belong to ourselves but to society and the state. Huang Rui
Huang Rui (born 1952) is a Chinese artist known for his social and cultural criticism. Life and work Huang Rui was born in Beijing in 1952. During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent at the age of 16 to Inner Mongolia where he worked as a farmer. He later returned to Beijing, working in a leather company until 1979. There, he studied art briefly at Beijing Worker's Cultural Center. Huang Rui was a founding member of the Chinese avant-garde art group The Stars Art Group which included artists Wang Keping, Ai Weiwei, Mao Lizi, Ma Desheng and Li Shuang and was active in from 1979 to 1983. This groundbreaking group of amateur artists was the first publicly active art collective to protest government censorship after the Cultural Revolution.
