Shu Ting
Shu Ting (; born 1952 in Jinjiang, Fujian) is the pen name of Gong Peiyu (), a modern Chinese poet associated with the Misty Poets. She began writing poetry in the 1970's and later had her works published. Life Shu Ting grew up in Jinjiang, Fujian. However, as a teenager her father was accused of ideological aberrance and moved her to the countryside. Upon her return to Fujian, she took up job positions at a cement factory, a textile mill, and a lightbulb factory. She began to write poetry and, in 1979, published her first poem and was one of the first people to have her work published in the underground journal ''Jīntiān'' ''(Today).'' She became part of the group known as the Misty Poets. Other Misty Poets include Bei Dao, Gu Cheng, Fei Ye, and Duo Duo. The journal, ''Jīntiān'' ran from 1978 to 1980 until Deng Xiaoping, a new Chinese statesman halted the publication due to suspicions of ideological nonconformity. Jinjiang, Fujian
Jinjiang () is a county-level city of Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China. It is located in the southeastern part of the province, on the right or south bank of the Jin River, across from Quanzhou's urban district of Fengze. Jinjiang also borders the Taiwan Strait of the East China Sea to the south, and Quanzhou's other county-cities of Shishi and Nan'an to the east and west, respectively. It has an area of and a population of 1,986,447 as of 2010. Misty Poets
The Misty Poets () are a group of 20th-century Chinese poets who reacted against the restrictions on art during the Cultural Revolution. They are so named because their work has been officially denounced as "obscure", "misty", or "hazy" poetry (''menglong shi''). But according to Gu Cheng, "the defining characteristic of this new type of poetry is its realism—it begins with objective realism but veers towards a subjective realism; it moves from a passive reaction toward active creation." The movement was initially centered on the magazine ''Jintian'' (), which was founded by Bei Dao and Mang Ke and published from 1978 until 1980, when it was banned. Guo Lusheng is among the earliest poets of the sent-down youth generation poets and was an inspiration for several of the original Misty Poets. The Hoklo people or Hokkien people () are a Han Chinese (also Han Taiwanese) subgroup who speak Hokkien, a Southern Min language, or trace their ancestry to Southeastern Fujian, China and known by various endonyms or other related terms such as Banlam (Minnan) people () or Hokkien people (). Yang Lian (poet)
Yang Lian ( zh, 楊煉 Yáng Liàn; born 22 February 1955) is a Swiss-Chinese poet associated with the Misty Poets and also with the Searching for Roots school. He was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1955 and raised in Beijing, where he attended primary school. His education was interrupted by the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution after 1966. In 1974 he was sent to Changping county near Beijing to undergo 're-education through labor', where he undertook a variety of tasks including digging graves. In 1977, after the Cultural Revolution had ended and Mao Zedong had died, Yang returned to Beijing, where he worked with the state broadcasting service. Early career Yang began writing traditional Chinese poetry while working in the countryside, despite this genre of poetry being officially proscribed under the rule of Mao Zedong. Fujian
Fujian (; alternately romanized as Fukien or Hokkien) is a province on the southeastern coast of China. Fujian is bordered by Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west, Guangdong to the south, and the Taiwan Strait to the east.
