Shorea Gibbosa
''Shorea gibbosa'' (also called yellow meranti) is a large Tropical rainforest#Emergent layer, emergent rainforest tree species in the family Dipterocarpaceae. It is native to Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. The tallest measured specimen is 81.1 metres tall, in the Tawau Hills National Park, in Sabah on the island of Borneo. Dietrich Brandis
Sir Dietrich Brandis (31 March 1824 – 28 May 1907) was a German-British botanist and forestry academic and administrator, who worked with the British Imperial Forestry Service in colonial India for nearly 30 years. He joined the British civil service in Burma in 1856, shortly afterwards became head of the British forestry administration in all of Burma, and served as Inspector General of Forests in India from 1864 to 1883. He returned to Europe in 1883, dividing his time between Bonn and Greater London. In retirement he dedicated himself to scholarly work, resulting in the book ''Indian Trees'' (1906), his ''magnum opus''. Brandis is considered the father of tropics, tropical forestry and has also been described as the father of scientific forestry. Singapore has a wide variety of flora. Plants are mainly used to beautify the landscape of Singapore. The national flower is a hybrid orchid, Vanda Miss Joaquim. As in any tropical rainforest Singapore is home to a number of very large trees from the families ''Apocynaceae'', ''Dipterocarpaceae'', ''Fabaceae'', ''Malvaceae'' and others. A number of these thrive reasonably, but for the large ''Shorea gratissima'' there's a problem - seeds won't germinate, and the reason for this is not known. Fruit of a ''Shorea'' species ''Shorea'' is a genus of about 196 species of mainly rainforest trees in the family Dipterocarpaceae. The genus is named after Sir John Shore, the governor-general of the British East India Company, 1793–1798. The timber of trees of the genus is sold under the common names lauan, luan, lawaan, meranti, seraya, balau, bangkirai, and Philippine mahogany. Taxonomy ''Shorea'' fossils (linked with the modern sal, ''S. robusta'', which is still a dominant tree species in Indian forests) are known from as early as the Eocene of Gujarat, India. Tawau Hills National Park
Tawau Hills Park, was established in 1979, primarily as a protection for the water catchment area of Tawau town, Sabah, Malaysia. It is located 24 kilometres from Tawau, and comprises 279.72 km² of lowland dipterocarp rainforest, surrounded by oil palm and cacao plantations. The park offers picnic areas, camping sites, and chalets. The Park contains rugged volcanic landscapes including a hot spring and spectacular waterfalls.
