Shooting At The 1956 Summer Olympics – Men's 300 Metre Free Rifle, Three Positions
The men's 300 m rifle three positions was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1956 Summer Olympics programme. It was the seventh appearance of the event at an Olympic Games. The competition was held on 1 December 1956, with 20 shooters from 14 nations competing. Nations had been limited to two shooters each since the 1952 Games. The event was won by Vasily Borisov of the Soviet Union, the nation's second consecutive victory in two appearances (tying Switzerland for most gold medals in the event). The Soviets finished 1–2, with Allan Erdman taking silver. Vilho Ylönen of Finland earned the bronze. Martin Mauricio Gison (born 14 March 1914, date of death unknown) was a Filipino sports shooter. He is competed at five Olympic Games, the most for any Filipino as of 2008. Gison's first Olympics was in 1936 at 22 years old. He also competed at the 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1964 editions of the Olympics. Herbert Voelcker
Herbert Bernhardt Voelcker Jr. (January 7, 1930 – January 23, 2020) was an American sports shooter, professor and engineer. He competed in the 300 metre rifle event at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He was a pioneer in computer-aided design. Biography Voelcker was born in January 1930 in Tonawanda, New York. At Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Voelcker studied mechanical engineering, before going to the University of Rochester and Cornell University. At MIT, Voelcker was part of the rifle team and the rowing team, becoming a collegiate rifle champion in 1950. Voelcker then served with the 82nd Airborne Division, and was part of the army team that won the national team rifle title. He earned a Fulbright Scholarship and went to the Imperial College of Science in London, England, to study electrical engineering. During the 1950s, Voelcker also coached the rifle team at MIT.
