Bisley, Surrey
Bisley is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Surrey Heath in Surrey, England, approximately southwest of central London. It is midway between Woking (to the east) and Camberley (to the west). The village had a population of 3,965 in the 2011 Census. Much of the west of the parish is covered by an acidic heath, which is used by the Ministry of Defence. The National Shooting Centre, headquarters of the National Rifle Association, is within the historic bounds. Coldingley Men's Prison is also in the village. Shooting sports have been included at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics except at the 1904 and 1928 games. Summary Events Shooting was one of the nine events at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, in 1896. Early competitions included some events now regarded as unusual, such as live pigeon shooting in 1900; dueling in 1906 and 1908; and numerous events restricted to military weapons. After the 1900 games, the pigeons were replaced with clay targets. In 1907, the International Shooting Sport Federation came into existence and brought some standardizations to the sport. Shooting events were held in 1908, 1912, 1920 and 1924. When shooting was reintroduced in 1932, it consisted of two events. From this, the number of events have increased steadily until reaching the 2000–2004 maximum of seventeen events. The 2008 games had only fifteen. Art Cook
Arthur Edwin "Art" Cook (March 19, 1928 – February 21, 2021) was an American sport shooter and Olympic champion. He won a gold medal in the 50 metre rifle prone event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Biography Cook was born in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was the captain of the rifle team and a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. Cook began shooting in 1939 while attending a Boy Scout Camp. In 1941 he came in last place in a Boy Scout team shooting match. He stayed with the sport and kept practicing. He won his first victory in 1946 at the National Junior Smallbore Rifle Championship. He then entered the University of Maryland and led them to the National Intercollegiate Team Championships in 1947 and 1949 where they set record scores both years. The team lost a close championship contest to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1948 and took second place. He was named to the All-American Rifle Team all three years. He left school ... Willy Røgeberg
Willy Røgeberg (1 December 1905 – 15 December 1969) was a Norwegian rifle shooter who competed before and after World War II. He won two Olympic medals. He won his first olympic medal in 50 m Rifle, prone at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. After the war he won a bronze medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, this time in 300 m Rifle, Three positions. He also won several medals in the ISSF World Shooting Championships. After his Olympic medal in 1936 he started his own guns and sporting equipment business in Oslo. During the Second World War German occupation of Norway, Røgeberg was arrested by the Germans on 29 May 1942 on weapons related charges. Torsten Ullman
Torsten Ullman (27 July 1908 – 11 May 1993) was a Swedish pistol shooter and entrepreneur, most famous for his gold medal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where the Germans were favourites in the free pistol competition but Ullman won by a margin of 15 points. His record score of 559 would still be competitive today in this event. He also won the World Championships in Free Pistol in 1933, 1935, 1937, 1947 and 1952. Ullman was not a free pistol specialist but rather an all-round shooter, achieving great successes in all three pistol events that existed at the time. In the Rapid Fire competition in Berlin, he won the bronze medal after an extremely rapid shoot-off, and three years later he became World Champion in that event, being one of only four shooters to win major worldwide titles in both 50 m Pistol and 25 m Rapid Fire Pistol. Shooting At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Shooting at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin saw the reintroduction of 50 metre pistol (then called Free Pistol) but still only had three events. The competitions were held from 6 to 8 August 1936 at the shooting ranges at Wannsee. Germany succeeded only in winning one of the three gold medals; the others went to Scandinavians after great accomplishments: Torsten Ullman won Free Pistol with a margin of 15 points and a new world record, and Willy Røgeberg achieved the maximum score in the Prone event.
