Geography The community is located on the Yadkin River near Grassy Creek and is named for the nearby Bean Shoals rapids in the Yadkin River. The community has an elevation of above sea level. Area landmarks include Shoals Baptist Church, Shoals United Methodist Church and Shoals Elementary School. Attractions Sections of the Pilot Mountain State Park that reach the rapids of the Yadkin River are located in the Shoals community. Also located here is Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, an working farm that is operated by turn-of-the-century technology to showcase what life in northwestern North Carolina was like at the time. Surry County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 71,359. Its county seat is Dobson, and its largest city is Mount Airy. Surry county comprises the Mount Airy, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greensboro-Winston-Salem- High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1771 from Rowan County as part of the British Province of North Carolina. Yadkin River
The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in North Carolina, flowing . It rises in the northwestern portion of the state near the Blue Ridge Parkway's Thunder Hill Overlook. Several parts of the river are impounded by dams for water, power, and flood control. The river becomes the Pee Dee River at the confluence of the Uwharrie River south of the community of Badin and east of the town of Albemarle. Pilot Mountain State Park
Pilot Mountain State Park is a North Carolina state park in Surry and Yadkin Counties, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Pinnacle, North Carolina on highway US 52, it covers and includes the distinctive 2,241 foot (683 m) peak of Pilot Mountain. History The Saura, a Native American tribe of the North Carolina Piedmont region, knew the mountain as ''Jomeokee'' meaning the ''Great Guide''. It served as a guidepost also for the European settlers of the Carolina who similarly named it ''Pilot''. Due to the effects of European diseases and attacks by northern Indians, particularly the Seneca, the Saura Indians abandoned the area around 1700. The first European settlers in the area arrived in the late 1740s from Pennsylvania. Settlement in the area was slow due to its isolation.
