The Shire of Victoria Plains is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about north of the state capital, Perth. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Calingiri. History The Victoria Plains Road District was gazetted on 24 January 1871 covering an area extending as far north as Carnamah and east to the South Australian border. These areas gradually obtained their own local government over the next 40 years. The Melbourne Road District separated on 10 February 1887. On 11 December 1908, Moora Road District was gazetted and also separated. As a result of the WA ''Local Government Act 1960'', all remaining road districts became shires, including the Shire of Victoria Plains, on 1 July 1961. There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the ''Local Government Act 1995''. State Register Of Heritage Places
The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. As a result most register records include dates and details from the three different processes. Yerecoin, Western Australia
Yerecoin is a small town located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, in the Shire of Victoria Plains, north-northeast of the state capital, Perth. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for the CBH Group. History Yerecoin was the Aboriginal name for a nearby well, first recorded by a surveyor in 1879. It was first established as a railway station on a new line north from Toodyay, which was approved in 1914 and was extended from Bolgart to Calingiri in 1917 and further to Piawaning (10 km north of Yerecoin) in 1919. The surrounding land was owned by the Midland Railway Company, and was not subdivided by the company until 1925. The company also set aside for a townsite at Yerecoin, but the land was sold to one owner, and development of the townsite area was slow. Piawaning, Western Australia
The townsite of Piawaning is located in the northern agricultural region, 160 km north-east of Perth and 28 km north-east of New Norcia. At the , Piawaning had a population of 309. A northward extension of the railway line from Toodyay to Bolgart was planned in 1913, and was to terminate near Piawaning Spring. When the exact route of the line was settled in 1919 the government decided to set aside land for a townsite at the terminus. Piawaning, the nearest Aboriginal name, was selected and the townsite was gazetted in 1920. Piawaning Spring has been shown on maps of the area since 1877 when recorded by a surveyor, but the meaning of the name is not known. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. New Norcia, Western Australia
New Norcia () is a town in Western Australia, north of Perth, near the Great Northern Highway. It is situated next to the banks of the Moore River, in the Shire of Victoria Plains. New Norcia is the only monastic town in Australia, with its Benedictine abbey founded in 1848. The monks later founded a mission and schools for Aboriginal children. A series of Catholic colleges were created, with the school that became St Benedict's College in 1965 later gaining notoriety for being the site of sexual abuse that took place in the late 1960s and 1970s. Mogumber, Western Australia
Mogumber is a locality in Western Australia. It is in the Shire of Victoria Plains, and situated along the Bindoon Moora Road. Although it is a settlement, it is not officially a townsite. It is the location where the Moore River East joins the Moore River. As of the 2016 Australian census, Mogumber had a population of 59. A grain storage bin was built at Mogumber in 1980 by CBH Group. It was the first of CBH's " Type K" grain storage facility. , the grain storage bin is not used. Mogumber has a tavern. Mogumber West Nature Reserve is located in Mogumber. Bolgart, Western Australia
Bolgart is a townsite north of Toodyay in Western Australia. It is in the Shire of Victoria Plains. The town derives its name from a nearby spring. The spring was discovered and the name recorded by explorer George Fletcher Moore in 1836. The area was settled in the 1840s and one of the first settlers, J Scully, named his property Bolgart. The townsite was gazetted in 1909. The name of the town is Aboriginal in origin and means ''place of water''. The town was struck by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on 11 March 1952 followed by several aftershocks. The earthquake was felt as far away as Perth, where taller buildings were rocked. Carnamah, Western Australia
Carnamah is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about north of Perth along the Midlands Road. According to 2021 census, the population of the town is 407. The town was gazetted in 1913, and is named after "Carnamah", the name of a pastoral property established by Duncan Macpherson in this location in the late 1860s. A telegraph station was established here in 1873, and is referred to in 1876 by the explorer Ernest Giles. Giles spells it "Cornamah" in his book, but "Carnamah" on his map. Macpherson's property "Carnamah" derives its name from Carnamah Spring. The name is probably Aboriginal of unknown meaning, or possibly is a Gaelic word meaning "cairn of the cattle" or "cattle rocks".
