Shire Of Swan Hill
The Shire of Swan Hill was a local government area in north-western Victoria, Australia, along the Murray River. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1893 until 1995. From 1939 onwards, Swan Hill itself was managed by a separate entity; the City of Swan Hill. After a large-scale statewide amalgamation program by the Victorian Government in 1994–1995, they were reunited under the Rural City of Swan Hill. History The Swan Hill Road District, which initially covered most of north-western Victoria, was incorporated on 8 July 1862, and became a shire on 14 August 1871. The Shire of Gordon was severed and incorporated on 26 May 1885, from parts of the East and West Loddon Ridings. The Shire of Mildura followed suit on 10 January 1890, severed from the Lower Murray Riding. Mallee (Victoria)
The Mallee covers the most northwesterly part of Victoria, bounded by the South Australian and New South Wales borders. Definitions of the south-eastern boundary vary, however, all are based on the historic Victorian distribution of mallee eucalypts. These trees dominate the surviving vegetation through most of Mallee, (except for swamps and areas along waterways, and very rare stands of ''casuarina''). Its biggest settlements are Mildura and Swan Hill. At the 2011 census, the four local government areas (LGAs) that are usually thought to define the district had a combined population of . Road Districts Of Victoria (Australia)
Road districts were established in the colony of Victoria, Australia, pursuant to legislation passed in 1853 and were an early form of local government in Victoria. The districts were outside towns, which were instead incorporated either as municipalities or boroughs. The road districts were created between 1853 and 1871. Road districts were established after public meetings to discuss boundaries etc. followed by a petition to the governor. Upon the proclamation of a district a public meeting was held to elect officers of the Road Board, which was responsible for the building and maintenance of local roads and bridges and raised finance from rates levied on landowners. Kooloonong, Victoria
Kooloonong is a locality in Victoria, Australia, located approximately 147 km from Mildura, Victoria and was on the Yungera railway line. Kooloonong was established as a soldier settlement area for returned servicemen from World War I. By the mid-1920s, it was a thriving township with a bush nursing hospital, government offices, a school, an RSL hall, a railway station and sporting facilities. The town has declined since then and now has only one occupied house, plus the rarely-used hall, a CFA shed and unused grain handling facilities. The railway north of Swan Hill was extended from Piangil to Kooloonong in March 1920 to support the soldier settlement farms in the area. For many years, water was carted to the location by train because there was no natural water supply. The line from Piangil was closed in December 1986. Boundary Bend, Victoria
Boundary Bend is a small town in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is near the junction of the Murray River and Murrumbidgee River. It is located about 50 kilometres east along the Murray Valley Highway from the twin towns of Robinvale in Victoria and Euston in New South Wales, about 90 km north of Swan Hill. At the , Boundary Bend and the surrounding area had a population of 132. The access to the junction of the two rivers is down a track off the highway. It was at this point that Captain Charles Sturt and his party of explorers first sighted the Murray River in 1830.
